i want to become a game designer but apparently i have no idea where to start off. I am currently self-studying flash action scripts. is flash a good way to start off??
This is me speaking from experience:
Take a degree course in either Games Design or Computer Science (Applied computing or whatever different names they have, they are all the same thing). Complete your 3-4 year degree, then you need to step into the games industry. It does not matter what job you take, just enter the industry, be it programmer, tester (QA), or junior designer (which would be your goal, but its a VERY highly unlikely spot to get as a fresh graduate).
Becoming a game designer requires either:
1. A very strong stroke of luck where you find a company that desires a junior designer AND you happen to meet the requirements.
2. Already be inside the industry, and show the company your enthusiasm for games and your creativity, you will eventually get a transfer to be a game designer if you desire it.
While you are studying and not capable of getting a job yet, its best to start creating/designing your own games or mods for fun. This will really make your resume (CV) look alot more attractive to potential employers. The 1 most important thing to enter the games industry isnt skill, its passion. With great passion and enthusiasm, the problem with skill can be overcome.
