regardless of my own experiences, I cannot say I "believe" that things like this, which are unproven, exist.

Honestly, I have to go with what seems most likely to me and what seems, empirically, most solid.
Just because I've seen or heard a few things a few times, doesn't mean I would believe it to be true.

Makes sense. Humans have a tendency to attempt to keep what they consider "Reality" in more or less the same shape, and whenever weird shit happens to them, they try to ignore it.
Ghosts I do believe in. I've seen 'em, I swear there's one following me around and randomly flipping my pants offa my chair and onto the floor...HEY! Stop that, you...
Err...Wait. Wasn't supposed to type that. Anyways, most people do encounter paranormal shit in everyday life, but tend to ignore it or write it off a coincidence, is what I think.

I don't know if it's all that. I allow all things into the realm of possibility. I just can't trust my own senses all of the time, you know? So while I might think that I've seen ghosts or other such things, if I'm by myself, I have no way of knowing if I actually have, really. But that's just me.

Basically what you're trying to say is the absence of evidence does not mean the evidence of absence.

I'm saying there know known knowns, things we know we know, and there are known unknowns, things we know we don't know, and there are unknown unknowns, things we don't know we don't know. This is a known unknown.
Actually, I'm just saying you can't say it's absolutely impossible. Things most people would consider impossible would actually just be infinitely improbable.

I could see "ghosts" every day have a billion other people tell me that they're real but one properly designed and peer reviewed scientific study telling me that they weren't real would cast doubt in my mind. It would take dozens of such studies for me to believe that there's a less than 1% chance that they're real but just one scientifically sound and honest study would make me question their existence.
Sensing a believer backlash I'll clarify that I'm not saying I blindly accept anything vaguely scientific. To cast any doubt it would need to be methodologically sound, be correctly interpreted, possible to replicate, and peer reviewed. Anything less than that is someone simply giving me anecdotal evidence and anecdotal evidence is absolutely worthless outside of forming a hypothesis.

I haven't seen a ghost in all my years, but I also haven't seen a rattlesnake in all my years. That doesn't mean that rattlesnakes (or ghosts) don't exist.
Alas, as a somewhat scientific person, I am forced to say that ghosts don't exist. That doesn't stop me from getting pumped up whenever "evidence" pops up to prove the existence of ghosts.
I don't take a firm stance on this issue because it doesn't matter. If ghosts do or do not exist, how does that affect life in the least?
