Best Backup Method

I was wondering what's the best method to backup my Anime, Manga, Video Games, VN etc.
Get a huge external (500 GB)
Burn into DVDs.
Also, is Rar recommended for long time storing, i tend to burn the video games as Rar of the setup folder.

for external drives,get a NTFS one and not a FAT one(could be one or the either) as FAT would restrict moving of ISOs(mountable video or game file) beyond a certain file size(say a really large game iso,you cant move it to your external from PC)

lol, if you are burning DVDs it will take forever to do 500. Not to mention it is not as cost effective as buying a 1 tb hard drive that I have seen for sale as low as 60-70 bucks.

Yeah, External Hard drive is best option.
And you can format the external hard drive from fat32 to NTFS before you start using it, if you'd like.
Sure packed archives take less space and stuff, and if you're not gonna use them for a while or not much at all, it surely would be nice idea to put into a .rar.
I gotta get soon external hd too so i can think about reinstalli x64 OS, guess i rather wait for Windows 7 Ultimate to land here..

Thou i know there are lot of 1TB stuff out, i still think that's a DAMN big storage and enough for very long time unless you collect a lot of games (VN's) and stuff.
For me i'd think 500GB could be enough, but since i want to save my Anime's as well, i'll take 1TB external harddrive (with SATA) to be sure that all my ANIMU and other stuff gets into it (i still have 500GB+250GB hard drives inside my comp =d).

Even if you collect a lot, filling 1TB is very hard to do, it took me a good 2 years to fill up my internal 1TB drive, and I archive a lot of Games, Movies, Music, Anime, etc.
It's fine for backing up I think.
My suggestion if you're really geeky would be to buy a Network Storage box
What they are essentially is a tower full of harddrives that connect directly to your router, and they act as a Network Storage Device, windows of course reads them as if they were shared drives under your workgroup, and you can store all your files there permanently, that way when it comes time to reformat, or whatever you only need to do just that, reformat.
Mine has a bunch of SATA drives in it and they're extremely fast to run anything off of locally (for instance I run all my anime off of the network box and it plays smoothly) even more so once those digital harddrives get big, as they're even faster than SATA.
Anyway, that's my suggestion.
It's fine for backing up I think.

Personally, I'd just get an internal drive... but thats just me. I guess external drives can be convienient when you want to take your movies to a friends house, but they are more finicky too. The NTFS file system wasn't really designed for external drives either. This isn't a huge issue tho, just remember to goto 'safely remove hardware' before unplugging your external if it uses NTFS.
If you wanted an even more secure method of backing up your files, you could get two drives and put them in raid 1. You'd have to use internal drives though, and you'd lose half the total space. But this is just about the most secure method.

One of the rules of backing up data is that you don't have it in the same place so that in case of a catastrophic loss of data you have a backup somewhere in this case putting another drive in the computer just means if something goes pear-shaped there's a good chance of you losing the backed up data.
External drives are good but they're also susceptible to failure as hard drives are mechanical devices.
Personally if you have the money get a NAS (network attached storage) box like Tranquility said, make sure it's capable of running RAID 1 so that your backups have a backup on the NAS itself.

Damn right.
Power here in Australia is fair cheap but the fucking government want green solution to replace the coal powerplants we got here though they produce only a fraction of the power an average coal power plant or nuclear can crank out.
If you're building a server for file purposes and nothing more look for a decent sound deadened case and get some good quiet fans on there (Noctua comes to mind).

Your best bet would be an external hardrive. Nobody backs up on CD's anymore as files cannot be dropped in and out of CD's.

an external HD is good enoug, if you just use it for backup i guess. but i personally would go for another internal, because :
1. its cheaper (a wd 500 gb external cost 140$ in my country, and an internal wd caviar green 500 gb is 55$)
2. personal experience. my old 80 gb external which i use to backup my anime just decided to went corrupted one day. taking almost all my anime with it. that's why i don't put that much faith in external HD since.
