Bragging about crap...

I'm beginning to wonder why people brag about the most stupidest things. Things like a guy says he wakes up at 5am and the other guy comes in and says, "OH REALLY? WELL I HAVE TO WAKE UP AT 3:30 EVERY MORNING!!" or a guy says he has a test tomorrow and the other guy starts saying he has four tests, football practice and has to work 5 jobs. Why do people brag about having it worse than other people?

Because it's a 'polite' way to say "You are such a looser, i have far worse than you and i'm not complaining. You are weak"

...or something among those lines.

I was once in Austria studying at this summer music institute, and this kid comes into my room at 5am or something ridiculous(since I don't need to be up til 8) and decides that it is important to wake my roommates and I and inform us that he is drunk out of his mind because he had drunk an entire bottle of coconut flavored rum. Needless to say, this was incredibly annoying, we didn't care, and it ended with us shoving him out in the hallway and slamming the door.

One upmanship is a real problem that certain people develop as over compensation for poor self esteem. Happens all the time. My own brother is that way. If you have a story, he has one that's better about himself, no matter what the subject. It could be the stupidest shit you can think of, something NO ONE would want to compare to, and he would do it anyway.

You had a good time in college? He had parties every night, you suck. You had the flu AND pink eye at the same time when you were a kid? He had mono and an allergic reaction to a bee sting at the same time when HE was a kid, almost died ya know... Oh, and if he can't relate to it, then it's retarded and not worth anyone's time and you're a moron for caring about whatever it is.

Amazingly enough, I still get along with him in spite of all that...

Yeah, it's one of those "little things" but it's really annoying. I can understand the need for one-upmanship, but if someone shares something with you, I don't think they're looking for a dick-waving contest. It just seems unnecessary to give them one when all you were looking for was maybe a little empathy.

Really makes some people unpleasant to interact with on a general basis. But, y'know, I don't think they really think about what they're doing. It's just automatic.

I have a problem with this myself, but I'm working on it. I'm getting better at thinking about what I'm offering before I open my mouth.

I think everyone knows someone like that. Like a relative, or that friend you keep around who is more often than not a complete douche, but is fun to make fun of and can be entertaining at times.
