You're welcome. Thus far I've found the hardest part about doing such a thread isn't so much coming up with factoids I like, but choosing which one to put up each day. I know some of them will go over better then others but don't want to put out all the best facts right away and fizzle out too soon. I've also gotta make a conscious effort to mix up the subjects enough to keep it appealing to a wider audience. I must say though, I've enjoyed doing the factoid of the day quite a bit.

In the 1920?s, Utah passed a law requiring that women?s skirts come up no further then three inches from the ground. Well thats no fun.

Good question, I'm not entirely sure. I would imagine it probably sat around on the books without being enforced for quite awhile. It was in response to the growing flapper trend though (which included skirts as high as the knee, although with knee socks).

yep, people often think of flappers as dressing slutty by todays standards, but it was quite different at the time. Showing a smidgen of knee was pretty controversial at the time.

In a study regarding teenage girls that took chastity pledges, 9/10 broke the pledge within 1 year. They also had an equal or greater rate of contracting an STD because they were much more likely to have anal sex (generally without a condom).
Not enough statistics given on this 'fact'. Where were the girls from? What were the ages? What kind of income did their family have? Did they have drug or alcohol problems?
This study really doesn't tell us much at all!

I don't have the exact details on it since it was something from a class I took awhile back and only have what notes I jotted down. The details I can provide are that it was spread throughout the continental US, they were teens under 18, and were taken as volunteers, family income and drugs/alcohol were not taken into consideration. I would imagine there was a variety of economic groups and, as with any other group of teens, varied amounts of drug/alcohol use.
Keep in mind these are various things I found interesting, not everyone is going to or needs to like them. Also, remember these are just interesting facts, not political statements, no need to get fired up about them.

No one is fired up. Just wanted to know more about the fact you posted. But you answered my question, that you didn't know. Remember this could be completely out of context.
Companies can go around saying 4/5 doctors recommend Advil. Well, they can take 5 out of an entire list of hundreds, and say it's 4/5. Nice little marketing strategy.
When posting facts, it's very important you provide as much relevant information to go with it. Otherwise, how can it be interesting, when it doesn't actually say anything?

That was actually to be a bit of a disclaimer to anyone reading it, not specifically you.
Regarding the amount of proof given, as I mentioned before, these are all from sources that I consider credible and should I have any doubt I do the necessary fact checking to satisfy my own doubts. If people doubt what I post, they are encouraged to do their own research if interested and find sources they themselves trust.
The professor that I got this particular factoid from was rather good about explaining the various sources he brought up and how reliable or unreliable he thought they were. Most were from various groups without any known reason to skew any results. Unfortunately I don't have the name of the organization that did this study, although I do trust it as being fairly trustworthy/unbiased. Had I not, I would have posted some sort of note with todays factoid or just chosen a different one altogether.

The word barbarian actually comes from a Latin word referring to any non-Romans. The reason was that it was hard from the Romans to figure out the languages of people from the north. The Romans thought it sounded like they were just saying ?bar bar bar bar?.

Kind of funny how roleplaying games use "Barbarian" as a class or even sometimes a race. Another example of how meanings of words mutagenize over the centuries.
