what is the best freeware for removing incriminating evidence from computer so that it can not be recovered?
Darik's Boot And Nuke if you're in a hurry.
Eraser if you want to be a bit more selective. Keep in mind though, that Windows' shadow volume copy might still fuck you in the ass and it's quite hard to get rid of stuff that's been saved there.
The best thing to do, is to store everything encrytped in the first place.
TrueCrypt comes handy for that... especially since if offers "plausible deniability" that is you can create 2 levels of encryption and later reveal the non-incriminating 1st level if its demanded.
"In July 2008, several TrueCrypt-secured hard drives were seized from a Brazilian banker Daniel Dantas, who was suspected of financial crimes. The Brazilian National Institute of Criminology (INC) tried for five months (without success) to obtain access to TrueCrypt-protected disks owned by the banker, after which they enlisted the help of the FBI. The FBI used dictionary attacks against Dantas' disks for over 12 months, but were still unable to decrypt them."
