IPhone, who's getting one

I'm thinking about the 2.0. It's a lot cheaper, but do I really need it? I don't have an MP3 player, but I never go anywhere. But I had 30,000 songs that just sit on my PC, but I don't listen to them most of the time.
I've also not had a cell phone for quite some time. People seem to become slaves to their phones.

new 3G iphone costs minimum 140 dollars more than the 1st generation iphone when you get all the costs. The phone may be 100 dollars cheaper than its predecessor, but being on the 3G network, you're mandatory data plan charge is now $30 for personal users instead of $20 as it was from the 1st gen iphone. So basically for the minimum 40 dollar cellphone plan, you're paying 70 dollars before tax, which avgs about 80 dollars a month. So you're payin 2120 for the 2 year contract + 3g iphone. 1st gen iphone was 1980 for 2 yr + iphone, so there's your 140 dollar difference. If you're on a business line and need the Outlook syncing and what not, the business data plan is even more on the 3G network.

No, I dislike anything by apple. Even though the new Iphone 3G is cheaper, the service fees for it end up making it more expensive then the first version.

I'm no apple fanboy - I usually hate Apple products due to being overpriced, flimsy pieces of crap.
Despite me hating the company - especially for being greedy fuckers for attempting to charge me not only the $20 for the apps that cost them nothing to give, but yet another charge (another 20? or as high as 50? who knows?) for the new 2.0 firmware coming out next month - the iPod touch certainly has its pros.
I think I kind of defeated my argument already in that previous paragraph, but the iPod touch jailbreak community has really made it much more than an expensive brick that can play music and less than 3 video formats. My iPod Touch now has 72 applications, at least half of which I use on a daily basis.
Here's a small list of what I can do with jailbroken applications:
- Graph Mathematical Functions
- Edit Text Files
- Access and search many, many dictionaries including the WordNet
- Access a copy of Wikipedia offline
- Play a huge amount of games, including emulators (GBA, SNES, NES, PSX), Solitaire, zMachine, 3D car racing, Tetris, Tap Tap Revolution (like DDR), FPS games and so on. There are many games that make use of the Accelerometer, such as Labyrinth, a game where you roll a ball by moving the actual iPod Touch.
I'm not saying this can't be done on another smart phone, especially since Google Android is going to be in common use soon. I'm just saying that despite its bad aspects and company that pays little respect to its customers, you can certainly do much worse for the price.
