The new gen ipods have pretty good sound quality output but they cant be rockboxed so they cant run alot of loseless formats only apple loseless (AAC). The older generation ipods can be rockboxed but lose sound quality output especially the 1-3rd gen ones. The best Ipods in term of overall sound quality (hardware & Software) is the Ipod Video generation players.
But the Ipod gets its arse kicked in every department of sound output by the
Sansa Fuze/Clip and the
Sony X1000.
For overall best media player in terms of alot features and sound quality superiority, the
Conwon series player or the
Samsungs P series and the
Sony X1000 would be the best.
But these players cost far more then the
Sansa Fuze/Clip.
This, although you need a quality set of headphones to hear the difference. If you aren't an audiophile, just go price/memory ratio, with an ear to reviews for the odd dire player.
I bought an 8gb Samsung P3 because it has enough memory and a touchscreen (I like video so less buttons = bigger screen) for a great price; that the sound quality and features are better than the similarly priced Nano is a nice bonus, if I ever get around to enjoying them.
