To be prohibited to use an avatar of some character just because someone claimed her in a forum-game doesn't make any sense what-so-ever, so no, it's not wrong.

This whole "waifu" thing is fucking stupid anyway. Just because someone "claimed" a girl isn't stopping me from stealing her from them. I guarantee that more than one person has claimed a certain girl (I've seen a shitload of Konata/Kagami sigs for example.)
I've never bothered trying the waifu thing because everyone I thought up was "claimed" and I didn't wanna go through trying to figure out what the hell to do.

All I know is, I'm not going to go through a big list of who owns what girl before selecting my avatar. If I want Sayla from Gundam as my avatar, I'm not going to bother seeing who claimed her first.
