Learning Japanese ?

my methods are simple but time consuming plus less stress and more relaxed ^-^

All you have to do is memorize and master the Hiragana & Katakana.

Then, just learn some basic interjections and some very basic grammar with someone who already knows it. {trust me, learning yourselves by the book won't do much good unless your a natural}

Learn the correct way to pronounce it and with the correct accent just to make it more real and interesting.

And everything else is just go with the flow etc:
-read the jap dictionary [if willing]
-Watch a LOT of anime and catch the phrases that is crucial for daily life and those that interest you.
-Watch some JAP DRAMA as well just to familiarize with realities way of speach.
-Finally, you'll be an average levelled jap speaker.

Yes, for starters I also reccomend Namasensei. But make sure you check all the other ones posted too. You may find one you that suits you better than this.

I cant take classes and don't know anyone who speaks japenese, so it will be mostly self study. I just need some motivation and some time to start this.

Tomorrow i will have my first exam of basic japanese, wish me luck guys, its gonna be a long night of study...

I think it's important to note that if you ever wanted to use something you learned from anime/manga, it's probably for the best if you check with someone first before using it. Same with stuff you learned from songs.

I remember one of my room mates used a word he learned from a song and his professor laughed and said "that word is used only in songs." Not sure which word it was, though.

Archfiend: Hmm, I remember my first motivation was just pure curiosity. I am naturally intrigued with languages and I learned some Korean before Japanese so I had some kind of grounding (Korean and Japanese have similar grammars). When I first started, I just wanted to be able to put something together. It was satisfying knowing I could pick up more and more sentences from anime so I kept going. I hope you find your source of motivation. My motivation nowadays is just the urge to master it. After so many years, I need to get somewhere!

man, i also want to learn japanese, but i have never been good at forign language. I have a rough understanding of spanish, not nearly fluent, but that was after 4 years of it at school. I dont even see how i could possibly tackle Japanese. Thank you 4 your post, i may use these sites and tips people have provided.

I did not really like the japanese lessons of Namasensei. I've tried to lern japanese with it but then dumped it. I've now bought two books which help much better.

The first is "Das große Anime Lösungsbuch", it explains the japanese language in a very easy (and sometimes humorous) way and the best at it: It does not teach you tourist-japanese but rather anime-japanese. But I don't really know if there is an english equal so...

The other one is "Remembering the Kana" (well I use the german version of it since german is my mother-tongue). It allows you to easily learn all Hiragana + all Katakana in about an week. (learning one hour per day)

From limited experience, Rosetta Stone is pretty awful for Japanese, imo. As has been said Genki is the best, and otherwise Pimsleur is very good, but that's only for learning to speak it. Both are fairly expensive, Pimsleur you can buy from their site and Genki from JList. There is always the free option, of course, but it's far better to have the actual text and exercise books than printouts anyway.
