Large Hadron Collider.
The LHC is set to switch on tomorrow, and acording to some theories, it can spell doomsday to us all... by making a black hole.
What it's supposed to do is help researchers answer some big questions about the universe—why particles have mass; what dark matter may be made of, and why matter survived its brush with antimatter when the universe was young.
It's a small price to pay to settle a £50 bet.

And in case you were wondering (which I know you were), the LHC can defrost a pizza in 30 nanoseconds (billionths of a second).

Not just minature black holes, but producing "Strangelets". They could conceivably initiate a runaway fusion process in which all the nuclei in the planet were converted to strange matter.
Then there are vaccume bubbles. If a bubble of lower energy vacuum were nucleated, it would approach at nearly the speed of light and destroy the Earth instantaneously, without any forewarning.

Huh. I wonder what its like to be compressed into a quantum singularity with all matter in the universe. Well, if the shit hits the proverbial fan when they switch it on, we'll all know very soon.

All of these "doomsday" theories are utterly ridiculous. There is no way that the LHC would have enough energy to cause particle collisions at near light-speed. The LHC scare reminds me of the Y2K scare. Remember when stores started selling "Y2K OK" merchandise? Remember when millions of people thought that the world was going to end? What happened? Nothing
