In anime, there are sometime 'M' girls. eg. Mistina in They are my noble masters and Sa-chan in Gintama. Can someone tell me what does M stands for?

people who loves to be tortured or hurt.
I heard it from Doujin work and Lucky star, but they just say S or M (He is a M or She is a S)
