Here's a salute to all the mechs out there. Each month I'll show case a mech and you'll disscuss about said mech. If you don't like it don't complain and post in the the thread. PM me if don't like it or you'd like to suggest a future mech for discussion.

A true classic

Finally, a new thread in the mecha forum...

Voltron aka Beast King Go Lion, a classic. I can't remember much of it but the formation sequence is still clear in my mind.

I hope you don't mind me asking, any reason for you to choose Voltron to start with?

Probably 'cuz it was one of the first "big robots combine to make bigger robots" shows that most people saw.

Although, did the robots do anything apart from fly out and combine? >.>

I'm not quite sure but I think each lion can fire element like energy from their mouth...

Shinichi, have you ever watched Voltron?

Its a show form the 90's, I admit the design looks childish but then again I think its because the series is actually designed for the younger audiences.

Voltron is from the 80s, although a new version did come out in the 90s, too.

Not really one of my favorites, but Voltron is indeed a classic that just about everyone knows of.

Possibly my favorite Voltron-related moment happened in Megas XLR, when a team of five with lion mechs (like the Voltron crew) came to Earth to defeat Coop, who they thought was a bad guy. The faux-Voltron crew's enemy came by and defeated by Coop and the crew. So, Coop took the five mechs and forced them onto Megas's arms and legs to give him the power the defeat the bad guy. The crew screamed as the mechs were crushed and forced onto Megas's body. God, it was hilarious.

Am I the only person alive who preferred the original vehicles Voltron over the Go Lion version? Not necessarily the robot's design, just the overall show...

Voltron's a classic, no doubt, but comparatively speaking it's easy to see that he was developed with toys in mind. The design is pretty clunky, even compared to older mech designs from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam. It's very... blocky, in spite of the way the animators used artistic license to make it seem otherwise. I do like the individualized looks of each of the lions and the crest on the chest of Black Lion / Voltron was a nice touch.

In a lot of ways I think my opinion is biased by my disliking of certain aspects of the show. The pure inability of any of the lions to do anything effectively on their own was a bother. Why not form Voltron immediately? Voltron also had a number of weapons that also proved utterly ineffective. Just form the damned blazing sword and have done with it already.

Anyway, not the greatest mech, but not terrible, either.

Final grade: 5.5/10

Never liked the look. I preferred power ranger mechs, and I actually saw Voltron before power rangers. In the end, I only like it because Robot Chicken can use it for their skits.

It sure was hilarious. Megas is also a great mech. It's kind of funny because I'm pretty sure they were making fun of both Voltron and Power rangers.

Good point. I started to notice that it would fade over the course of a week. I would like some suggestions as to any mechs that could be shown next.

Would we just be listing any mechs? Or would it be something like older to newer?

If it's older, I'd say Wing Gundam Zero. Newer, I'd say Macross Quarter

Whoops my mistake there, must be confused with the 90's version.

So now its changed to week eh, considering the amount of mecha in anime and games I think its a good move.
