If it's not that curly then you can go for it. The added weight from the extra hair should straighten it out to a nice wave or possibly straight. I have straight hair so I never had to contend with such matters unless I slept with my hair wet.
Edit:You also play guitar or was it bass? Either way, grow it out like Swedish death metal bands.

As I saw your post I was like... nice 7-string.
I think you should grow your hair out, the result will probably look like my hair. I got real bad curls too and I tell you, that shit is rad. Curly hair looks more hippie-esque IMO, though.
Curls don't straighten out when the hair is longer, it actually gets "worse".
