Seriously though, Americans don't use gates that often. It's just an aesthetic choice. A lot of people find the use of gates as an annoyance since they are useless unless combined with a high fence or concrete/brick wall. Which in many areas is not possible to build or even allowed by local laws. People use gates only if they REALLY need to secure something, which they will invest in the fence or walls that are required. A lot of Apartment complexes in the suburbs or in the inner city will tend to have gates with some sort of code system to get in.

If an American family is worried about criminals breaking into their homes they buy a security system like A.D.T.and/or they would buy a gun.
