Problem with subtitles.

Okay, so I'm watching GG's fansubs for Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch, and when I get to episode sixteen I'm suddenly getting a jumbled mess of characters on the screen when I play the episode in MPlayer or the default movie player in Linux. It works with VLC, so this problem isn't a big deal necessarily, but I dislike VLC and would rather watch this in MPlayer if the error is something I can fix by adjusting the settings on MPlayer. So I was wonder if anyone had any idea of what the error could be. I've looked it up a bit on the net, but nothing really seems to be related to my problem. I've changed some settings here and there to see if I could figure out the problem, but I admit I don't really know what I'm doing so I didn't want to screw around with the subtitle settings very much.

Well it works with VLC so I'm assuming it has something to do with how GG worked on that episode and is suddenly not compatible with MPlayer, or there is some setting that I need to change as a result...

Edit: Well, after reading some comments on MAL, it turns out I'm not alone. Looks like GG fucked up several episodes making them virtually unplayable. Ugh, and this is why GG is one of my least favorites. -_-

Yeah I noticed VLC didn't play it quite correctly, but instead of the random jumble characters, it has a weird black bar at the end of the subtitles, but it is certainly better than any other option.

gg did fuck up a few subtitles on a few eps on purpose in order to exploit known issue in VLC. All done for the lulz and that VLC is shit. Also gg are softsubbed and have other alterations to them but so do alot of fansubs. VLC is fail never use that shit. Im thinking this is the ep that gg decided to troll vlc users.

Because your using linux My solution may not work but I think its worth a try.

Im not sure what codacs do but you could try the lastest cccp. Its made for windows so I don't know what this will do for linux but who knows. Worth a try I guess. Im not sure if these codacs work on linux but who knows maybe.

Could also try updating mplayer. I dont use mplayer and idk how to get it on windows. If you can try and send me Screen shots of a few settings I might be able to assist a bit better. For windows we have codacs that allow us to see subtitles. Directvobsub, Does linux have anything like that. Also if you know how can you toss me the line the from the .ass script. Could also be settings but for that scene it looks doubtful that there would be anything extra. If you can show me the .ass and more settings for mplayer I might know a decent solution.

I'm pretty sure CCCP only works with Windows, and I have the latest version of MPlayer. I'll post the Subtitle/OSD tab if that'll do any good:



Yeah, I saw the Thoranime links, but I'm one of those guys who doesn't give two shits about HD and the files were twice as big as the regular MKVs... I'll pass.

For the most part your problem is something that for the most part seems near impossible to me. I do some timing and unless something is in the script those things shouldn't happen.

All I can guess is mess with... Unicode subtitling, SSA/ASS, conver to mplayer. If none of those work try messing with encoding. If none of those work you could extract the subs from the mkv and run them as softsubs. Im going to take a WILD GUESS and say this problem is because gg likes to protect their scripts. Cant open or extract the script times in a normal way. Something might be conflicting.

If everything fails ill be nice and send you a softsub script.

I haven't either, but a friend told me that. So you are probably right. He's not exactly the most trustworthy computer helper I know.



Yeah, I'll probably just mess around with stuff. And thanks but I'll probably just watch any more of those episodes in VLC. They work well except for that small black bar at the end, but it isn't much of a disruption.

I'm not sure about Linux but I had a problem where subtitles would be timed wrong and play too fast. ex. Chihiro's To-Love-Ru OVAs. The built in subtitles for Media Player Classic look awesome but have a problem with them for some reason. I just had to disable them and use VSFilter and it fixed them. To me, it seems all the subtitle groups make sure that what they put out will work with VSFilter, which accepts a lot of formats. Hope this helps you somehow.

Does VSFilter work on linux? I know this is crucial for making fancy subs look nice and pretty much subs all around. Using an outdated version can cause problems. Should find a way to make mplayer work. VLC will cause problems later on and all around is not supported by fansubbers.

Hm, I'm not entirely sure what to do. I messed with the settings some more last night and couldn't figure out the issue. This is the only time I've had problem so I'm going to hopefully assume its GG being assholes as per usual and not an incident I'm going to run into again.
