So I'm trying to turn my ancient (but beloved) XP 01 Home Edition into a gaming rig, but I run across a big problem. Only 2.08 GHz Processing. Is it possible I can replace the processing chips without losing anything on my computer? Is it even possible at all?
Ironically, I'd bought 3 gigs of RAM and brand new Graphics and Sound cards before I remembered general Processing.

As long as the processor is the same socket type as the motherboard it should work without any problems. I've upgraded mine from a single core to a dual core a while back and it went fine. If your motherboard is more than three years old you may find out that you don't have that many processors to choose from and they may not even be much of an upgrade for you.

Anyway so long as you use a CPU with the same socket type you should be fine, but make sure your motherboard supports the chip.

Post your specs so we can see how old your box is. If your on a core 2 duo lga 775 socket, then you have room to upgrade... if your motherboard supports it.
If your on a pentium 4 lga 775, that isn't core 2 duo compatible, then you may need a new mobo.

Even if there's a chance you have to replace your current motherboard due to incompatibility with your processor, you can always let a company make a backup file for you. Everything except most videos, images and audio files (which will most likely stay on their place) will be stored there.
Downside is you probably have to reinstall about 60-75%. But at least it answers your question; It'll cost you about 25.00$ more if you let a company do it for you but everything can be stored safely inside a backup file.
