I'm planning on learning getting a guitar and learning how to play
My question is regarding Groove Metal (Particularly Pantera-style). How does the guitarist create that amazing buzzing sound at the beginning of Cowboys from Hell? Or is that a bassist that's playing? Is there distortion used?
I apologize if I sound very stupid but I don't have any technical knowledge of the guitar except for chords and such.
I dont really know what you mean by "buzzing", but Im guessing youre just talking about the opening Eflat intro.
Its basically a matter of which effects you use. And yes, distortion is used throughout the entire song.
I might be wrong, but it sounds like hes using a slight Flanger effect for that opening.
I dont know how he got it so high pitched and down to a normal pitch though, probably another effect added in during studio editing, or he used an octave pedal.
As for the note being played, I'm not 100% sure, but you definitely need a flanger effect pedal. You can get a flanger pedal or pedal board at guitar center or something.
You shouldn't concern yourself with signal effects like that until you're several years into your instrument. With enough distortion you could throw your guitar at the wall and it'd sound nice - you won't be learning anything from getting a flashy sound, you might just end up deceiving yourself.
