This movie depicts the authentic story of the hunt for the dangerous criminal Emile Buisson, who escaped from prison in 1947. During three years Buisson manages to hide from detective Borniche by repeatedly killing his informants. When he's finally caught with help from the little criminal Paul, Buisson will have committed more than 100 robberies and killed 30 people.
Mainly picked it up because it stars several actors I like (
Alain Delon as Roger Borniche, Jean-Louis Trintignant as Emile Buisson, Renato Salvatori as Mario le Rital) and because I enjoy the franco-italian 1960s-1970s cinema in general. As opposed to today's hollywood trash those people knew how to make movies. Even if it's just a thriller!
As a whole, it's a solid movie. Delon and Trintignant destroy as always; Trintignant does a good job on the cold-blooded psychopath Buisson, while Delon (in his second role as a copper after "Un Flic") manages to portray Bordiche as an idealistic, but not necessarily naive, good-hearted but headstrong detective. In terms of direction, cinematography, etc. it's a solid piece of craftsmanship, but not outstanding.
It does have its shortcomings, though: It doesn't hold up to the pristine work of Melville (Cercle Rouge, Le Samouraï, Un Flic) with its intricate character sketches and its ultra-professionalism. Nor does it measure up to Rosi's political thrillers of the time (Cadaveri eccellenti, Le mani sulla città ) which mixed supreme suspense with acrid political commentary.
Bottom line: a nice 1h47' of entertainment, definitely above today's average - but nothing breathtakingly outstanding. 6/10

Here's the torrent if anyone's interested. I'll be seeding it.
Will be grabbing that tomorrow. I'm a fan of Koreeda Hirokazu's work; his
wandafuru raifu is one of my top ten all time favorites.
