Recording with an amp head

For a while now, I've been wondering what I might need to start recording from my guitar into my computer, I've slightly looked into it and have no idea what is necessary. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

Can you record directly into your computer through the microphone jack with an amp head? If not, is there any danger in trying?

Well, I'm not a big guitar person, but couldn't you just hook it up to the computer's microphone jack?

From what I've seen, you need a mixboard [or whatever the hell those things are called]. It has several jacks for guitars and microphones. You plug each jack into the board, and the board gets plugged into the computer. A mixboard [as I have dubbed them] has dials for each channel, so that you can adjust volume, master volume, bass, etc. Fair warning, last time I checked they were quite expensive. If you go into a place like radio shack and explain it to them, they'll know what you're talking about. And RadioShack most assuredly has them. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much! when recording, to eliminate extra noise, should i use a preamp or a noise gate? no need to answer this, but feel free to.

Noise gates are good, but if you aren't familiar with them it may take some getting used to. A nice alternative [though not as flexable] is Noise Enhancement.

That I can unfortionatly not help you with. While I am familiar with software noisegates, I am not familiar with hardware noisegates at all. [Sorry :( ]

Hi, I hope this helps. What you need to record your guitar into your computer are. First a usb or firewire audio interface. Depending on what your setup is you may choose either of them. The good ones are expensive but worth it because if you use an bad interface there will be too much latency between your playing and what you hear. Good brands are digidesign, m-audio, native instruments. You need to have a decently fast computer with recommended 2 gigs of ram. Then you need a sequencer or virtual studio software. Digidesign's Mbox comes with pro tools, but there are other options. Ableton Live (my pick), cubase, sonar, logic. You can aldo use a virtual instrument alone like Guitar Rig 3 but it is deifficult to record with that since you can't multitrack only loop.

I had a friend who had a Line Six POD, which will run you anywhere from 1-4 hundred USD. I highly recommend it though, because, through using his computer hardware and the software provided, he could attain just about any sound he wanted, add his own or preloaded backgrounds (drums, ambiance) and even record voice. A couple of his tracks made him sound like 4-5 man band, when all he had was fake drums, his guitar and a mike. There are a shit ton of editing tools and the like too. Another nice thing about the POD is that it sits right in your stack (or on your floorboard depending on version) and you can load specific tones and effects from your computer onto the POD and output them before or after your own effects.
I can't help you with actually going straight from the head to the comp because I have no experience with doing that. I want to at least learn how to play an F chord and a simple scale before I start getting funky... :P
