I never really found local high school sports team rivalries all that interesting. Though I almost went to a school with Felix the Cat as their mascot... that would have been pretty cool.

The stupidest people who take their rivalries to far are the fans of philadelphia fans. I remember when I was about 13 or 12 I was watching a football game with my dad with the cowboys vs eagles. One of the recievers went up for a pass and was hit in the air, then landed and broke his neck. The fans cheered that he broke his neck and had to be taken away on a stretcher.
Plus there is the infamous case when they pelted santa claus with snowballs after a loss.

Are people more upset over the TV station question than the actual mugging?
Maybe the losers decided that they wanted some cash but didn't want to mug just anyone, so they said, "We'll only mug people who like this TV station that sucks." That way, they don't feel like they're savages who would mug any person they see.
