You aren't supposed to TELL people that there is any time at which you can have unprotected sex and not risk pregnancy, because then people will think they can actually figure out the days properly, and most people can't do it entirely accurately. Women are different, and even the same women will not necessarily maintain a set cycle. If you are a gynecologist, then you should have no problem figuring out when it's ok to fuck your girlfriend without a condom and not get her pregnant. But as just some dude, you'd be better of using some form of birth control.
That's like telling your kid "the mousey ain't dead, it's only sleeping".
This might sound cynical, but I'm all for telling people the truth, no matter what they make of it.
If you're not supposed to tell people that there is any time at which you can have unprotected sex and not risk pregnancy, then you're not supposed to tell people that protected sex is OK either. Condoms are so terribly unsafe that sex with a diseased partner is Russian roulette with an 8,3333333333-shooter revolver.
The only way to really stay safe from STDs without living abstinent is fidelity and regular check-ups; the only halfway reliable way to really avoid pregnancy are the pill, etonogestrel combinations, IUS or sterilisation
in both partners, as individual sterilization has a surprisingly high failure rate.
The condom is a very convenient and practical method, and I'm all for people using protection, but one needs to remember that it always remains a placebo to some degree (the aforementioned 8.3333333 degree), and that it isn't the magical protection against STDs and/or pregnancy it is sometimes billed to be.
Ah, but what if you ask your gyno and they give you the schedule?
If you go every month? maybe.
It doesn't really work that way. Going to a gyno once a month won't do you any good. The cervical mucus and basal temperature needs to be sampled much more frequently (You don't need to be a gyno, but you need to know your body well. Better than most girls do, in any case), the woman needs to have an absolutely stable estrus, and if she's below 35 years of age you can pretty much forget about it. And if there's the slightest bit of stress, or any other factor that might destabilize her estrus, the whole thing flies out the fucking window straight to the moon. Add to that that with this method you can only have intercourse when her libido is at its lowest, and it becomes a very, very unfeasible method of contraception, despite its high safety rating in a
perfect use case environment.
