damn, I hope this isn't in the wrong section again
1. How to type hiragana, katakana, and kanji characters? Do I have to install a program or buy a special keyboard?
2. Lately my 300 GB external HD is making strange sounds. And it often disconnect and connects again, cancelling my file tranfers and making some files corrupted. I checked the cable, it's connected properly and the cable's condition is still fine. Does this have something to do with the adaptor or inside the HD itself? What should I do?
Any kind of help is much appreciated.

The first question isn't my area of expertise, but I would assume you need a special keyboard, which would include the software needed with it. To answer your second question, if there aren't any problems with the cable itself and your file transfers are being cut off abruptly or only getting part of the files, leaving some incomplete and corrupted, then it sounds to me like either the usb port that you have it plugged into on your comp is shot, or the port on the drive itself is shot. But if it is making funny sounds, then it may be an issue with the actual hard disc inside the drive...if this turns out to be the case, then you would be best off getting a new external hard drive. In fact if you are having any issues at all of this magnitude, then it is high time you dumped the drive. If it is still under any sort of warranty, then take it in to the place you bought it from if it is still covered under a store warranty, or call up the company hotline and find out were to ship it to if it is the company warranty that it is still covered under. Either way, you need to get a new drive, because it sounds like you got some serious issues man. Or rather, fuck just a few issues; sounds to me like you got the whole subscription, know what I'm saying?

1. Use the windows IME, no need to install anything at all. Don't know what window your using though.
For XP there's a little language toolbar on the bottom right or floating somewhere on the top right. Right click it and select settings or properties (can't remember, don't have a XP with me).
Add keyboard layout and select Japanese. You should be able to access the IME by click on the EN and changing to jap and the clicking on the corresponding type you want(eg. katakana, hiragana, half-width katagana etc.)
Not sure whether it does kanji or not but I think it does, I don't use it much.
There's one for Vista too, can give you a little less confusing instructions for it (because I'm using it right now):
Click on control panel
Click on "Change keyboards..." under the "Clock, Language, and Region" heading
Click on "Change keyboards"
Click "Add"
Find the Japanese one
Expand "Keyboard" and tick Japanese and Microsoft IME
Ok everything.
Language bar should appear near your clock/icons
Click the EN and change to JAP
Click the corresponding type, done.
FINALLY, Now for 2:
Time to copy the stuff out of your hard drive, it might be dying. Copy don't cut or you might lose both files.
After that format the hard drive (completely, don't do a quick format, delete the partitions and recreate them if you have to), copy a few large files (preferably 2 GB+) to test whether the corruption is still there then it's pretty much safe to say your hard drive is dying and it's time to buy a new one.
