Stick to Xp? or Windows 7?

Guys question cuz I want to change my Os. In your Opinion is it better if I change my Os Xp to 7? Cuz number One reason why I will change my current Os to new.... "I just already formatted my Computer cuz some of Stupid Virus attack my system my Internet speed became super slow.... and always shutdown...." then again it happens again.. VIRUS!!! It affect my graphic system when i change resolution or playing games, opening dxdiag....Suddenly RESTART "BLUE DEATH" My internet speed slow again and My Avira became Unknown "deacticated Guard"... So if i change to 7 will it be more more safe? to the virus?

Idk about more safe but its more efficient.

It doesn't help if you are using pirated version of windows that does not auto update. If you have to use a pirated Windows for ever reason, at least be up date on the latest genuine checks that allow for auto updates.

Despite the near unanimous condemnation of Vista, my old school's tech support personnel told me that Vista was less susceptible to viruses and other malware than XP, which despite 3 service packs, was more likely to be catastrophically infected meaning the computer was unusable. I don't know the technical reason for this, just stating what they told me.

Again this is a small sample, but it was from a fairly prestigious university, and the student clientele were generally more tech savy than the general computer user population.

So yeah from a security standpoint, anything would be better than XP. Upgrade to 7 if you can get it deeply discounted. Also I would take Tegumi's advice. However if you need to use warez, use this. Also paragraphs are your friend lol

If you're a uni student pick up a cheap Windows 7 Profession upgrade and install the beta and upgrade it (there's a workaround for the version issues).

Also changing OSs won't protect you from your own actions letting in virii or malware, no matter how secure a computer is it's only as secure as the meat bag behind the keyboard.

Sorry for interrupting but can windows 7 play or even install old games/applications (as old as year 2000)? I don't know if there's a compatibility issue in windows 7 like vista.

I've been planning to get windows 7 for my new rig but some of my questions can't be answered by my friends.

I think there needs to be a sticky for Windows 7 gaming or something b/c I seen this conversation before, not that I blame you for not digging up months old thread topics.

Let me put it this way, as far as I can tell the codebase for Windows 7 is the same as Vista for the most part. I use Vista drivers/programs for my Windows 7 for example when there is no official Windows 7 release yet for that hardware/program. So if the game/program you were running had trouble in Vista, most likely it will have the same problem in Windows 7. Google is your best friend in this regard to see if there is any specific incompatibility that has not been resolved.

Jumping from XP straight to 7 and skipping Vista on my home pc, I have noticed there are only a few incompatibilities still left b/c Vista has been around for a while and has a very large install base with exceptions. For example, Starcraft's incompatibility has yet to be inexplicably fixed by Blizzard, slowing the Windows 7 adoption rate for the lonely single South Korean male demographic jk.

However, If anything I would get Windows 7, b/c new games with new hardware will increasingly be more optimized for Windows 7 then XP. It is just a reality that game designers and graphic driver compilers want to move beyond XP's limitations like the 4 gig ram limit and Microsoft's decision to exclude XP from Direct X 10,11.

There's always the built in XP compability mode and also Windows XP mode if you get Professional Edition and above and have a CPU to support the hardware based XP virtualization if you really need to run something in XP.

I see, that solved a lot of my problems regarding compatibility.

About the XP mode, does it also exist in windows 7 ultimate?

Ultimate is inclusive of the features all the other versions have. So yes.

Back when it was between XP and Vista, I would have always gone with XP, but now, XP just can't keep up with 7.

Why do you *have* to upgrade, and upgrade *now*?

If you're current OS is good enough, Windows 7 won't have any features over XP that will magically transform your PC into an orgasmic experience.

My advice: let it wait.

Wait until specific software come out that actually use all those features, wait until software catches up to the hardware and you can use all that RAM, wait until the hidden security vulnerabilities are ironed out, wait until hardware vendors catch up and write solid drivers, wait until upgrading won't cost a leg.

It isn't critical to upgrade. Unlike Windows 2000, windows 7 is evolutionary not revolutionary (actual neither was 2000, but in that case that was the first NT available for the masses and brought substantial features that transformed your PC).

Finally unless you have a student discount Windows 7 is still damn expensive. If you already have a valid license, I see no reason to once again pay. If you don't but you need a *legit* OS for work I suggest checking out a Linux distro.

Take Ubuntu. You d/l an image, burn it, pop it into the drive and boot from it. Presto. You're already using it without doing anything else. Didn't even have to install it. That's why I suggest that you should *check* Ubuntu out. I *don't* say that you *should* you use it. It may not be good enough for you. You might not have the time to make the switch. But it's so easy nowadays to see what it's like that I think you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't take at least a look.

I'm dual-booting XP and 7 but I haven't booted up to XP since after the first week of copying appdata files over which was around Halloween time. Most problems were solved by simply reinstalling the program. Others were solved by use of right-clicking the icon and messing with compatibility settings. The only weird one I have is with Starcraft. I had to make a script that ends explorer.exe from running, then boots Starcraft and after I'm done playing it loads up explorer again. Thats only because the start bar messes up the game colors somehow. That start bar works great in more modern full-screen games though. Multitasking is easy as hell with it. Also I got the student-discounted professional edition for only $30. Ultimate edition has the same functionality but adds some fluff programs that you could probably find elsewhere for free.
