The absence of piano work

I remember the days where the piano was a common thing in metal/rock. Guns N Roses, and Van Halen were just a few bands that incorporated the Piano into their music, and I loved it. Nowadays though, I don't often hear it in modern music, which I find a slight letdown. What do you guys think about this? Do you think metal and rock music should re-embrace the Piano? Try to think about songs you like that have it. Did you think it spiced up the song? How about the intro to 'Breakdown' by Breaking Benjamin or the organ work in 'Tired of The Rain' by Blackstonecherry? Well, that's whats' on my mind at the moment. Do it the NWA way and express yourself!

I think it has a lot to do with the decline of blues based rock. Piano was a major player in blues, and many of the rock bands who grew out of that style had pianos, or other keyboards such as Hammonds. Blues is still in the sound of rock, but the days of blues completely dominating mainstream rock are over, too many other influences have come in an changed things.

Piano wouldn't work in most of the rock bands that I know of. And it seems completely out of place in metal. Unless it's a ballad or something, but those usually go against the rest of the band's catalog and sound nothing like any of their other songs.

I actually miss the sound of piano as well. It's something about the soft sounds in the piano that I like hearing alongside a guitar.

It just doesn't work within all styles. Power ballads have to be the darkest moment in hard rock music. They were...just awefull. A band shouldn't try to be what it's not. It's like all those hard rock bands that did Unplugged, man. If you are good at playing hard, fast, and loud, then play that way, that's what people want to hear.
Point being, if it fits in, sure, throw in some piano, but otherwise, leave it out, man.

I am all about putting in piano tracking....as long as it fits in, so I concure with what you say there. However, I disagree that [most] metal bands with piano tracks are ballads. I HATE ballads. HATE them. But I have heard many a metal track with piano in the background, and It fit well enough. Slipknot uses the piano from time to time. Black Stone Cherry uses it [and the organ]. Of course, Ozzy GNR and Van Halen might not count as metal anymore, but they surely used the piano. But I can't swear enough on the importance of putting in a piano track when it fits, and only then. If you implement a piano track just to say you have that instrument in your lineup, it seems pointless and the purpose is lost in the afterglow.
