There isn't actually a big difference. The thing is that if you spend a lot of time working on your desk, you'll probably put there items you use more often, or , in other cases, items that you don't really use, and therefore, have a merely "decorative" purpose.
On other hand, people usually put items they might need at night in their nightstand (or near the bed). Technically, those items say more about you , because you need them, or you use them often.
I'm a lazy ass, so i normally have a lot of things near my bed, so that if I want to use them, i don't have to get up to get them.
I have:

books (Art, literature analysis, a book on Japanese cooking , a scrap book, magazine(s))
Pencils/ pens
lamp,
my laptop,
water bottle,
cellphone,
extra pillows[/list:u]
p.s. I made my bed stand. I found it abandoned near a garbage container, brought it home, restaured it and decorated it.
