Which came first, the career or the degree?

Not literally, of course, because then this would be a terribly stupid question.

For those of you attending, planning to attend, or graduated from college/university, which came first: the type of degree you wanted or the type of career you wanted?

Did you want a specific career and pursued the degree necessary for it?

OR

Did you know what kind of degree you wanted and took a career based on the degree?

For me it was career, then degree. I didn't even know Library Science existed as a major until I did some research on how to become a librarian and stumbled upon it.

I chose my degree first. Truth be told, after one year of college, I still haven't decided what kind of career I want to pursue.

same, and im on my second try at finding something i love... good thing school costs a fraction of what it costs in the states.

Actually, I'm making money by going to school. I got so many grants that I get several hundred dollars extra even after buying my books - each semester.

But I thought of my career first. I want to be a chiropractor and I had no idea what sort of classes other then anatomy I'd have to take.

well i've been running around looking for jobs but still a no go so far :roll:

not sure but i don't think you would be considered the typical American in this aspect, i think most kids end up in debt by the end of their bachelors. Just speculation as I go to school in Canada.

Yeah.....right now I have neither of those things.

I chose my degree first, and upon graduation, I applied for random full-time positions, starting with the companies which I like.

If you are the type of person who plans far ahead, then I would say career comes first, before the choice of degree. On the other hand, if a person is the type who takes one step at a time, then the sequence is reversed.

although if i gotta choose,i'll choose degree first.

degree helps getting you a better job most of the time.

hmmm...it's always been career first for me ever since i wanted to be a bio-pharmacist, so i pursue the degree necessary for it.
