Why do people think the new century started in 2000?

Millions of people around the world have the misconception that the new century started in the year 2000, when it really started in 2001. But, if you count from zero to ten, it comes out to 11. Why does the media perpetrate this nonsense? Even in Time magazine they say that the decade started in 2000.

The milenium started in 2001 since the first year was 1 not 0.
The decade however, according to Wikipedia, did start in the year 2000 and will end in 2009, but what criteria they're actually using is unknown.
And to answer your question, doesn't 2000 sound way cooler than 2001 when spoken on an advertisement?
