Recently, while doing some Christmas shopping, I had a little dispute with my mom. We were looking for a DVD for my brother, and there were two kinds, a widescreen edition and a full screen edition. My mom wanted to get the full screen (because she personally hates the way widescreen looks), and I thought we should get widescreen (I thought my brother might prefer it, and there wouldn't be ratio problems). This got me to thinking - do people prefer one over the other?
Personally, I don't think a widescreen picture looks better, but I will always choose a widescreen edition over a full screen, simply because if a movie was made to be widescreen, the edges will be cut off if formatted to full screen. At first, I didn't care too much for widescreen movies, but as with most things, I got used to it after a while. It was just something different, and I needed time to adjust.
I tried explaining to my mom that the edges would be cut off in the full screen edition, but she wouldn't have any of it. I think she has a grudge against widescreen, for whatever reason.
How does Fakku feel? Does whether a movie is widescreen or full screen make a difference? What if it's not a movie but a show? A lot of shows nowadays are being broadcast in widescreen. If you prefer one over the other, is there a reason? Or is it not something you think about much?
I prefer full screen, the empty space on widescreen bothers me, but if it seems like a movie looks bad in full screen for some reason, I'll switch. I don't want to sacrifice too much picture quality.
even on televisions with the 4:3 aspect ratio, I prefer widescreen because, as previously stated, the edges are cut off. Its called pan-and-scan. The director [most of the time its him anyway] decides what is most imporant in each frame and crops it accordingly. The thing is, the more narrow the widescreen image, the more the image has to be cut. That is the reason some movies [mostly certain versions of anamorphic widescreen] do not make fullscreen versions. Some directors don't want to cut/alter their movies, and some forms of anamorphic widescreen would call for around thirty percent of the image. So yeah, I go with widescreen all the way. In everyone's defense however, I did have to adjust to widescreen when it started getting big, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't hate it at the time. [AT9]
