The only reason why I don't really want to get Windows 7 is because that it's not very compatible at the moment with most video games. Even now, most video games are still trying to catch up to Vista.
Then Windows 7 had to come along...
I will wait a few years until I decide to upgrade.
Believe it or not, I had more success playing games on windows 7 than on XP. One of my favorite games Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries ( a very old game) would not play, freezing on the start up screen in XP. Well it worked on my Windows 7 64 bit.
Every game other game I have thrown at Windows 7 has worked, the only game that didn't work was Civilization 4, but a patch cleared that up. Keep in mind, that all these game are 32 bit games, running in a 64 bit Windows 7; I give props to the Microsoft engineers for excellent backward compatibility.
I have also seen no performance degradation from running a game from XP or Windows 7. I didn't benchmark it but I didn't notice any difference.
This deal is limited until only January. After that if you are a student you will probably get a discount, but not one of this magnitude. 30 bucks isn't bad for a new operating system. I don't see Windows 7 Gaming as a problem, and the price is right so take the jump.
