After some serious frustrations with vista i finally found my next OS upgrade. The main reason i didn't want to switch to vista was all the bloatware that installed with it, i tried it about 5 different times which still gave me the same problems: performance. With windows server 2008 you get to choose what you want to install (after the initial OS installation). In some cases i found that server 2008 was even quicker than windows xp.
The only problem i encountered after about one to two weeks of use is that most security software like AVG and Avast! dont install on the server unless you have a 500 buck license for it. I currently use Trend Micro Internet Security Pro which was the only software i found which installed with a normal license.
Any other software that doesnt have a special server license installs just fine. The same goes for drivers, just download the vista drivers and your all set. I currently have all drivers required like Nvidia, Creative, and Razer. Some software i got installed: Daemontools, Tuneup Utilities 2008, Steam /w TF2, Devil May Cry 4 (directx 10 working), Foobar2000, Directory Opus, and about every other piece of software i tried works (given vista is supported by the software).
Another problem i found was my computer not turning off after the OS shuts down, it just sits there with a black screen not doing anything. The third problem is the os sometimes not booting properly, i think i might have found the cause of it though (turning off AMD-V in bios seems to have solved the problem, still need some more testing).
EDIT: It seems AMD-V was the cause after all, ive rebooted ~4 times now without any problems, the OS also turns off my computer now. I do need AMD-V though -_- im using Hyper-v, I guess its time for some research.
You can evaluate server 2008 for a total of 240 days. The initial trial is 60, after that you can rearm your copy and continue, when your next 60 days are over just repeat until you have used up your last rearm. So this only works if you reinstall the OS every 240 days, its legal and your copy is genuine. You can keep doing this until maybe there is some less legal way to a full copy...
Now my question is: Have you tried this OS yet? and have you come across any problems yet?
