Windows Vista Problem

First post in this forum...hello to all.

I have a TOSHIBA laptop that's running Windows Vista 32-bit home premium service pack 2. For the past two weeks, I've had this error show up spontaneously that says along the lines of: "Your computer needs to restart because the DCOM Launcher has unexpectedly failed." or "Your computer needs to restart because Plug and Play has failed." Plug and Play is a component of DCOMLaunch.

I've tried several things to remedy the issue. Spent 30 dollars on Uniblue RegistryBooster to check for registry issues. It found like 80 errors, but the DCOM still failed at times. I downloaded malwayrebytes' anti-malware, performed several scans, which found some adware/trojans, but the DCOM still failed.

I've cleaned out my temporary internet files multiple times, tried system restore multiple times until I figured out that the only system restore point I had was a point in time that I was already infected because the error would not go away.

I'm out of options, really. I've posted my problem on multiple tech sites to no avail (they haven't responded to me in weeks). If anyone here knows how to make failvista stop acting like a bitch and helps me fix this issue, I will love you for life.

I'm just about to call it quits and reformat. I'd rather not, but...sigh. I'd love to upgrade to windows 7, but my laptop probably can't handle it.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

ive had similar problem like "when the screen goes off by beeing idle 4 some time, when i come back "it's laggy as shit" {HELP??}

as for your problem mine had a very similar problem 2 yours so id recommmend u 2 format it, yeah format it D:, when thats done get a really nyce ativirus (like Norton 360, has worked wonders with me), and always when youre on the internet erase all history every 3 days and stick to defragmenting your lappy every one or 2 months all this combined oughta keep it nyce and fresh ;D also when u defragment it do a systen check clean up, manualy but remember this schedule is after u defrag it D:, sorry

Did a quick google, this is what I found:


Start -> Run -> type "services.msc" without quotations
Select "DCOM Server Process Launcher"
Right Click -> Properties
Change Startup type to Disabled
Click on Recovery Tab
Change all failures to Take No Action

That will not solve the problem, but it will prevent the symptom (restart). Also I am not on vista at the moment, so I have not tested this will work.

If your laptop can handle vista, it can certainly handle win7

Turning off DCOM is bad, as my sound system runs through that.

I am going to reformat and upgrade to win7 32-bit home premium this Saturday. Can't wait!

Why not 64-bit? Running on a processor incapable of 64-bit processing or below 4GB of RAM?

I am not pushing you to get 64-bit, but if your computer has 4GB of RAM, and a x64_x86 processor, then you should really consider getting 64-bit.

But since you didn't provide specs, I don't know what would be best for you. 32-bit is probably better in your case I'm guessing

I also agree about the 64 bit thing. By buying a Windows 7 license instead of waiting to inherit it via a new computer, I assume that your computer is fairly new and would benefit from a 64 bit OS. Beside expanding the ram limit, there are real benefits to using a 64 bit OS whether that be the new OS X 10.6, or in this case Windows 7.

Also, 64 bit OS's have matured enough that you shouldn't run into too much compatibility problems. Anyways, every windows 7 license key is for a 64 or 32 bit install, so its an relatively easy choice.

I am going to upgrade to 2GB of RAM. Processor can't handle 64-bit as many have stated.

I am not buying a windows 7 license; the university I attend allows us to get a windows 7 key for free as students.
