Wow with Blaze's description of the dragoon units, I would suspect the Mercurius' Planet Defensors sound more advanced, since you only need 2 of them to create a barrier, oh yeah and they can block incoming attacks, which is a hell of a lot harder to calculate than firing a gun.
My favorite mecha weapon is probably the beam scythe from Deathscythe Hell, it's a very stylish weapon that also happens to be really efficient at killing. The only weapon I would consider being as cool would be a Veritech, since the whole thing is effectively a weapon, it can punch, kick, launch 30+ missiles(depends on variant but the Veritechs with the least amount of missiles, would be the VF-1 series at 30 missiles), and it still has a laser(or 4) and a machine gun. Veritechs: built to win.
Come to think of it, the Planet Defensors are more advanced, especially the Scorpio's. Only a few weapons are actually capable of breaking through them, and from what I remember, the Twin Buster Rifle ain't one of them. Only weapons that come to mind are mainly close-range weapons. I'm guessing that the combined strength of all of V2 Assault Buster's guns could break through, but that's a little over bare minimum for long-range weapons. The only famous long-range weapons capable of breaking the barrier are the GP-02A's Atomic Bazooka and the Gundam X's Satellite Cannon. I might be overdoing it, but still...that's what it takes to break it down with a long-range weapon.
In any case, I agree about Deathscythe's Beam Scissors because it's one of the few beam weapons capable of working underwater, which is a huge plus. This especially applies to SRW games, since I use Deathscythe to deal with enemies in the water terrain.
As for the Valkyries, they're definitely good, though I worry on their reliance on missiles. If all their missiles are shot down, they rely on their guns, which aren't that powerful compared to other long-range weapons in the RR world. The FAST Packs sort of make up for their disadvantages by adding even more missiles and a big gun. I was actually pleased with the Valkyries in Macross Frontier because now, they actually have a weapon for close-range combat. The only other instance of a close-range weapon being used would have to be Isamu using a bayonet of some sort.
