I find lossless format completely pointless, but if you want to waste space on your hard drive that's your prerogative. Anything above 128 and your ear can't tell the difference, technically. That's the whole point of lossy: to remove extra information that the human ear can't understand (hear).
I have 17.6 GB of music with 4,592 songs.
Well sure, if you dont have a proper audio setup... I'll admit there are songs where you cant seperate one from another, but if you have a... lets say a guitar solo from Led Zeppelin ("Stairway to heaven" for example) you will be able to hear a clear difference between a 128 mp3 file and a lossless file. Try burning both of them to a cd and playing it on your home theater set, and then make a comparison. This is exactly the reason i dont buy music online, the only format available is lossy (except for some independent artists) like you have with itunes, msn, or any other big companies selling music online. You get less quality, yet you pay almost the same price, and dont even get me started on DRM. I bought some flac music at ALLOFMP3 once, but it quickly turned out they weren't as legal as i thought, hence the lawsuit and why its down now.
The same goes for pictures btw, take lossy and lossless png for example ... If you look quickly you wont see any difference, but start to pay attention to detail and the lossy format starts to become a pain (and yeah, i know its not exactly the same):
