4chan, What make it so popular

On the outside it said it's a imageboard where people can post picture and comment but i still cant understand what the attractive point of a imageboard is without user regularly upload pic. Furthermore all member are anonymous unless you can remember the 6 digit number "No.xxxxxx" of every people you encountered. So in the end isnt 4chan just like a place cramped with people wearing a same mask, trying to shout out loud without even care what other people trying to say ?
