Cell can be related to a gender, but they don't have a gender themselves. Your "male" cells don't exactly have a penis each, the just have coding to make you male. The only similarity the original cells would have been similar to females only because they gave birth to other cells, "birth" being a relative term because the actual process was quite different.
And how could there have not been swamps. To make a swamp you basically just need water and mud in a hot place, and we had that long before any life was on Earth.

The reason why the cells are female in my little story is in terms of humans, when things became male and female, it was the female who mutaded into a man.
We seem have different definition of what a swamp is so I'll just drop that one.
