There are
very few, as you call them, "recycled topics". There are many similar topics, differing in minutia but still different enough to be in separate threads.
What would you like? A "BIG OL' RELIGION TOPIC"? I'm not personally opposed to it, but forcing everyone who wants to discuss any facet of religion to join the cluttered jumblefuck that thread would be is essentially censorship.
As for the threads themselves, many of them begin with a premise which could, and often do, proceed as serious discussion for a while. When they
do devolve into opinion wars, however, what do you propose I do? The thread cannot be simply moved into Random, it is still not suitable for that section. If I lock the thread, it would undoubtedly bring the ire of one or more of the arguers who many feel they haven't sufficiently countered a specific point. Worse yet, it might give the impression that I am favoring the argument of one person over the other.
Regarding insults, that IS something I could reasonably do something about: delete posts or ask a inflammatory person to stop. Admittedly though, I DO have other things to do besides perusing the forums. On this note it would be the responsibility of the discussion participants (or even a 3rd party whistleblower) to bring such a case to my attention.
@ Lazy Artist: I understand your frustration, but there is a bottom line and you know people are complacent to rest on it. So while I ideologically support your appeal, there is honestly only so much you or I can do about it. You could say, "raise the bottom line", but not only would that drastically increase this forum's maintenance, it would also exclude a significantly larger populace than already -- something that I doubt Jacob would appreciate. Let's not even get into the users who would be convinced they were being discriminated against.
I'd really appreciate, however, if people would stop complaining about "same threads everywhere". If you *actually* see a repeat or nearly identical thread, please
REPORT it. If you cannot come up with a good reason as to why the threads should be merged, then you honestly don't have a leg to stand on, do you?
