Also, as tradition in fiction has shown us (as well as history) humanity always found it hard to accept what is different than them (or what most people would assume to be the norm). Simple examples were the black population in Africa; they weren't even treated as humans, albeit having all the features "normal" man had.
However I believe that an entity or several entities with basically unlimited knowledge of human history (as in the collective knowledge of all of humanity - in a computer), AI would be more understanding in that regard.
