Cispa Cybersecurity Bill
H.R. 3523, a piece of legislation dubbed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (or CISPA for short).
It would give companies the power to collect information on their subscribers and hand it over to the government. I was curious over everyones opinion over the matterof a new fight over the internet.
Can't find a copy of the legislation anywhere. So far it just sounds like a bunch of warning bells and people making a big to do about nothing.
Something people should probably bare in mind is that there is a lot of illegal stuff happening online. Illegal things are downloaded daily. Songs, videos, bootleg copies of movies, etc. The goal of these acts, I don't think, is to make sure, "EVERYONE DOES WHAT WE SAY!" It's to stop illegal things from happening...Which I THINK we all want...don't we? Don't we want illegal things to stop? Or at least become...rarer?
Yes, I'll be the first to say SOPA and PIPA were horrible attempts a this(PIPA less than SOPA in my opinion but that's something else).
But at this point it just seems like every single act that's supposed to affect the internet and security now is just being called an acronym and being compared with SOPA as some sort of scare tactic against the government. Until I see the bill, I ain't buying the scare tactics.
It's to stop illegal things from happening...Which I THINK we all want...don't we? Don't we want illegal things to stop? Or at least become...rarer?
Whatever gave you that delusion? Anyway, I would not be very surprised if it turns to be very much like SOPA, but until then, I'll be hoping against hope.

My ad, here I was thinking that people are basically good. xD

Whatever the name, its still the same. Shitty ass organization trying to ban fun.
If by 'fun; you mean illegal activity, sure.
In all seriousness though, I'm in support of making it harder to do illegal things on the internet, but I'm not in support of how they keep trying to go about it. Government needs some younger computer ethics advisors to help draw up these bills.
It's hard to make really effective bills that will be able to stop illegal activities that don't also give the power, if abused, to do a lot of highly intrusive acts that should not be tolerated.
Of course, the government isn't even making good attempts at this sort of thing. They seem to be going out of their way to make really really bad attempts. So either they truly don't understand how the internet works, or they have an ace up their sleeve that they are waiting to play that will end up making us all go "FUUUUU" when they do play it.
Part of the problem, is that the major players in the industries affected, are refusing to adapt to people. There's always been a hint of piracy in everything and often the cost of piracy is offset by the business it does draw in.
But the industry is ignoring the current type of demand that people are wanting, and instead are trying to force people to adhere to their standards. It would be more effective for them to create a model that helps to provide what the people are wanting, at what they expect. If they did that, it would decrease a lot of illegal activity and increase their revenue.
Like the anime industry for example given the nature of this site.
If instead of attacking subbing groups and such for releasing the anime, they instead use them to release subbed anime fast, in a cheap model it would generate revenue that wasn't there before, as well as decrease a lot of the suppliers of piracy and decrease the level of it.
It would also be more effective than cease and decease letters.

Something to support you
Start from 7 mins. And can someone PM me how to embem video on certain point? i fail at that.
Well, this is once again a desperate attempt from the media companies to push us back into sheepness.
But I must admit they are starting to get better at it. A less "brutal" law would pass more easily, then you just need to make a few adjustments and bam, SOPA&PIPA are back up.
But sure, give it a try.
And I don't say I'm for illegal download, etc, etc.
But godamnit, just look at the world before illegal download, and after illegal download.
Is there truly a difference?
Well, okay, media companies lost millions in profit on sales, maybe some people lost their jobs.
Does anyone appart from the media companies and their governmental puppets give a frak?
Well, a few artists do, and sure, its their right.
Anyone else?
Internet was born as a great idea. It grew out of it. Today it is billions of light years away from its orginal purpose.
But it sure as hell still is a good place.
So lets see what this bill's got in the guts.
Maybe it'll turn out fine, but hey, wait and see.
Should any anti-illegal internet legislation be passed, sites which host pirateable material will have to be shut down, right? Wouldnt that mean that Nosebleed atleast would need to be shut down? And im not sure how the video upload/downloading, or manga for that matter, works. Does Fakku pay for them first? Even so, if the users dont pay for it, isnt it still illegal? Its like burning a CD for a friend, right? U pay for it, and ur friend doesnt. Its technically illegal, is it not?

Shut up, Anne Frank.
OT: probably not a big deal. Not my problem, either way.

I don't pirate frequently, but when a company charges an exuberant amount of money for a simple program, I'm more inclined to get it for free and spread around free advertising about how awesome it is, rather than stare at my computer and wonder why I bought it and potentially hated it. I look at pirating as a loan of sorts, because I always endorse a company if the product is good.
If I don't buy it, like I said.. free advertising.

Until we hear about Cispa from people and when I read it for myself, I wont say much till it comes to real debate and not false warnings from the press.

The passing of SOPA was delayed, to january then February, then it was shelved from what I understand.
