I have been reading a couple of small articles regarding to big-time companies or corporations buying off small businesses and making it their own. Personally I find the actions taken from Disney despicable and trash-like for claiming a work they haven't even put their fingers on.
It's true that Disney hasn't been making any big-time hits movies for a few years and has been getting desperate for the past decade, because this is not the first time Disney has been on a breaching point to go out of business.
The people who are intelligent know that it didn't come from Disney (and in fact they couldn't make it if they tried)... at least that will always be true.
My brother and I saw an advertisement on the television the other day for it, tried and failed to pronounce the name of the girl, and just shrugged.
Call me a plutocrat and corporate boot-licker, but didn't Disney actually buy the Western distribution rights to Ghibli films? There's even a famous anecdote that Hayao Miyazaki sent a samurai sword to the localization team as a gift and the note "No cuts". The guys at Disney kept their end of the bargain. While their was some fan-dumb outrage over some of the Woolseyisms employed, Miyazaki himself was very satisfied with their job.
Personally I'm no fan of the corporation Disney, for various reasons like their super aggressive legal stance and the copyright laws being extended ad infinitum on their behalf.
However in this case I don't see how they'd be the super bad guys, since the original author made a deal with them of his own will, they respected the source material and in the end brought some wonderful films to the American and western audiences that a lot of them wouldn't have watched otherwise.
Not as if Disney is stealing anything. Kinda like getting angry at disney for distributing Pixar films (then again, the OP finds something wrong with that, too.) Disney is simply moving away from producing to distributing.
Nearly every US animation company outsources their work and claim it as their own. Why should Disney be any different and "have the skills to make their own films?" Studio Ghibli outsources their animation to Korea and China, for fuck's sake.
Ok, let's get something straight. DISNEY DOES NOT OWN GHIBLI.
Never have, never will. Ghibli still profits from its overseas theatrical releases.
Studio Ghibli and Eisner John Lasseter teamed up long ago to bring the films over here and to other countries outside Japan.
Honestly, yes, it pisses me off too, to see the Disney logo emblazoned on all things Ghibli when they're in theaters, but without Disney's wide reach and funds, a lot of the studio's films would not be seen by many.
If you buy the Japanese version legitimately, so be it, but understand that buying an official Disney-sanctioned release does just as much good.
MILLIONS of companies do similar things to this. How do you think we get foreign films shown anywhere but their home country? International distributors.
True that Disney has brought it very far by distributing other people's work in the West and has made a lot of profit from it, but is it wrong to "claim it"?
I don't see Disney giving proper credit to the ones who actually made it. Not just Disney but others as well.
I'm not against it if they wanna bring other people's work and turn it to the West, but I just find it awkward claiming it is mine.

Are you shitting me?
I JUST went to see Arrietty in theaters. Yes, dumb ol' Disney shows their logo first, but then the big blue screen of Studio Ghibli's logo came on. Followed by accurate, English-translated credits for all the people who worked on the film.
They don't "hide" or take credit for the work. Yeah, some idiots who take everything at face value may assume that due to the fact they "presented" the film, they own it somehow, but that's just not the case.
John Lasseter and Miyazaki are even FRIENDS. He got a damn Catbus for his wall!
Free enterprise. They can made deals if they want. I still feel Disney is a heartless bunch of corporate scumbags who destroyed the company's magic, however, I can't complain if they're practicing free enterprise.
Lack of intel is one of man's most misleading factor. Even I just experimented it since I didn't know anything. I naturally took the first attackers' point of view as true and supported what they said and then the elders came, changed the initial situation's settings and the whole debate got turned over. I should become Izaya and rule the world...
