Is it good or bad to modified a program ?

I just have thought about this while playing visual novel (translated into English, of course). Translating a visual novel require reverse engineer, or decompiling. And this action may violate the term and condition of that visual novel. So does modifying any software.
However, translating (or modifying) any software is mostly, for better change. Like jailbreaking an iPhone, you can use a lot more applications and modify many things like themes, interface,…
So, here is the question: why do every software company forbid people to modify or decompile their products while it only make their products better. For example iPhone users are more happy because of JB.
I am not expected any Apple versus Samsung battle in this thread, though. It is just an example.

It comes down to the concept of intellectual property. People who create programs or other works like to know that other people out there can't take what they created, modify it then distribute it for their own gain.
J.K. Rowling probably doesn't want you taking her Harry Pottery books, rewriting them so that Harry is a purple racoon named squiggles that shoots pixie dusty out of it's ass. With products such as Xbox & the PS3 they don't like you monkeying around with the software because of how modders and hackers like to fuck with online game play. As for Apple and their stance on jail breaking your iPhone, they are just pretentious pricks and don't want your grubby paws messing with their glorious gift to the unwashed masses.

Its about money. With your iPhone example, they are forced to stick with (I think) Verizon and AT&T, in which the both of them pay Apple a fraction of to stay exclusive too. For other companies to make profit off the iPhone without paying Apple a percentage of the profits, you can guess that's upsetting. As well people obtaining software other than from/through them means they loose profits. As long as the Apple phone is the way they design it, they can continue selling you what they want, but if people customize it to what they want, getting rid of the need to give apple money...
I really hate the crap and bullpocky their pulling, trying to overturn "legal purchasing of a product and it's accessories transfers ownership and legal authority of, to the consumer" by making jailbreaks/modifications illegal and punishable by law.

[size=14]Essentially we get these modifications for free (most of the time, obviously you have to buy your Iphone before you JailBreak it but the JailBreak itself is free), which is not what the companies who produce the products we modify want, in fact they don't want us to modify their products at all because "why should they get a better version of our product that they haven't payed for?". Copyright laws and the like seem to me to be an attempt to keep the status quo rather than allow a freedom of information and technology that would allow human growth. [/h]

I gonna try and keep this short and concise. I agree mostly with the rest of you all. To answer the question: there are two answers. It is good to modify a program because it is beneficial to its users and what not. However, it is bad for the mass producers/engineers because of basically 3 things:
1. Loss of Money: They dont put in a program but we do. You get the point.
2. Copy write laws: Users doing stuff to their products infringes upon their needs for the device created.
3. Loss of money pt. 2: By us modifying the product we basically improve it. Engineers are not stupid, they can do what users do. However they dont because they want to create more future gadgets that will have those improvements. Therefore by users modifying the program with the issued version they lose sales on a newer and more expensive version.
Hopefully what I am trying to say makes sense. Sorry I wasn't concise. Please point out any mistake out: ill try to clarify.
