Is Otaku a Dirty Word?

I actually feel uneasy when I am called an "Otaku" by a person who has no or a few knowledge about Anime, because the general assumptions of Otaku's are people who fantasize about cartoons.

Basically, it's a similar concept to "Nerd." Nerds, to some, have evolved into something attractive and cool and intellectual. It used to have a severely negative connotation many years ago, about the same time it was originally coined. However, its not really the case anymore, its meaning and its acceptance has shifted, just like any other word has shifted meaning and connotation.

Personally i think it all depends on the opinion of the person who uses the word or of the person who it was said to. Just my opinion, though.

Well, In the long term no, because if you were to classify an Otaku a person who loves anime or anything related to the subject, then most of the population in the united states! The era we live in is full of gamers, geeks, and lovers of anime. The bottle line would be only if they took it took to extremes, like as they said in the article about men marring pillows. But all otakus aren't like that now are they? Its like calling everyone in America overweight, They say they are over weight but then you look at them and they're not all big walruses now are they? If you see flaws in my opinion, Please forgive meh :P

I dont think of it as a dirty word in the least, if someone likes being a weeaboo it does make them a nerd or any of that, its basically just describing their interests. The interest in japan culture otakuism, is a movement,.

I dont know where you saw that its ok to say the N-word, all i was saying is that Black people can say the N-word to a Black Friend and it is like saying Brother or Mate to them, However if I was to say it then its instantly racist.
You can hate me for this if you want but I personally do not believe the N-word should be classed as a racist word merely on the fact that Black People happily say it to each other all the time...I mean I have yet to go out anywhere and hear two white friends call each "Cracker" or two asian friends call each other "Chinky"

I consider it a bad word to be called. But that doesn't mean I care a lot. I enjoy what I enjoy. If that includes Anime, manga, Bishoujo Games, Visual novels, and Doujinshi then so be it.
I'd probably only care if a girl was calling me that lol, generally if they know the term they either are one themselves or have a not so good opinion of those who are. I know I felt uncomfortable being introduced as an Otaku to an exchange student (girl) by my friend. Considering she was Japanese and the word has a negative connotation...Not exactly a "good" introduction lol. First impressions and all.

Discrimination of Otaku happen to every part in the world no matter you are a mild, medium or an maniac fans of anime/manga. I understand that if one becomes too overly infatuated with their interest, it is not good for that individual and society as a whole. By wasting their entire time pursuing their subjects of interest, one will eventually not only lost touch with the outside world, but also neglect their school grades, families, friends, and ultimately, their own health and bright future. Also, imagine having a society filled with extreme real otaku roaming around not caring for anything else other than their interest, the economics of the country will undeniably decline and fall. Thus, moderate control on one’s interest must be exercised to ensure that the future pillars of the country do not deteriorate to become extreme otaku. But from what I understand about other thing, there is also people who having the same issue not only with anime or manga. Are we as otaku deserve to be discriminate just because our obsession is different from other people who they think there are 'normal'?

It's not about being 'normal' or not. It's about how useful you can be for the society. It's just as simple as that.

I generally don't think too much into the subject of whether or not Otaku is a "dirty" word or not. First and foremost it is a title. Proudly worn by some and others having had it pushed onto them in their societies (used in the context of where and/or whatever community that individual may live) short minded grouping of that person with other who share whom barely even share the most remote similarities of interests and assumptions that each person whom shares said interests are undoubtedly the same, regardless of what they had known of the individual up until that point. This a sad truth of most societies in this world. Alienation of those who don't/can't/refuse, to conform to the thoughts, habits, and interests of the majority as a whole.
I hold no real care for such labels/titles anymore as having grown up subject to and often on the receiving end of such alienation I've come to ignore such things almost entirely. The most it ever taught me though is that those who do actively try to label people and those who spread it around are not anyone worth associating with. They used the system of alienation for the means of their own self reassurance at the expense of others.
I apologize, I almost ranted off topic. To su it up I do not believe otaku a dirty word. Nor do I think any differently of other terms such as Geek, Nerd, or even Jock. They are just terms that describe only a small part of who we are as individuals.
If I had to label myself, well, some good friends of mine put it in better context than I even originally had. I am an enthusiastic Hobbyist. I am proud of the knowledge and experience of my interests and am always yearning for more, though not to the exclusion of real world matters to which I must attend to or the possibility of other things becoming part of my circle of interests expanding on me as a whole. I am proud that I do not conform, it allows me to better define myself as an individual and enables me to find friends who truly will enrich my life and I enrich theirs.
