I don't necessarily believe in crazy people, just a people with a largely differing point of view.
The example you gave is, well, hardly religious if you ask me. I just think that person is either looking for attention or think Lucifer, if he were real, would actually accept him/her. I could say he would not, that is if Lucifer were real.

They say madness is genius, perhaps it is. I mean, I think Einstein had a few screws loose and I think you could regard him as a genius. I think I may be babbling now, so I'll stop lol.

There are no statistics that tracks religious fanatics(that I'm aware of), what there are statistics of is Sunday church attendance, and it's lower each passing year.(same applies to mosques[with faster rates])
Yes there are still many of them, and there always will be, I've come to terms with that, good thing is that we live in times that they are easily ignorable.
And for all the damage fanatics do, I still find the semi believers* worse because they are the ones that back up fanatic's reason of existence.

Yes the insanity inside religious groups are rising each and every day more and more and I do not know exactly where they got this insanity from or how this is caused.

I will tell you guys something that is a fact:
There is a rise of groups of people who wish to take over the leadership of our religion of Islam. They are the ones who spread these extreme ideas that they should sacrifice in the name of our Lord, yes they are even pro-war people.

So if you ask me if there is a rise of insane people nowadays, I would ask you this:

Getting back on topic, some people can be overzealous when it comes to religion. Unfortunately, being extreme may lead to undesirable consequences on oneself and others, even though the person in question may not realize it.

No. There is a rise of atheism, and I applaud people ditching Christianity in favor of more rationale.

However, as a result of our brutal foreign policy, we do see more who step up in desperation to fight us, most of which who are Muslims.

The idea that there is some rise in radical Islam is really just propaganda in my opinion.

Well, I'd say to find an answer to your question, one must, as often, look to the past.

I will pick up what is considered by many historians to be the epiphany of religious zeal in the history of the world: the Crusades.

Basically, take the two biggest religions around. Make them fight each other for a "useless" piece of land and a city that has almost no economic or military importance.
Kill millions blindly. Brand deserters as heretics, commence what would now be called ethnic cleaning in some parts of the Arab World as you go. Make the wars rage on for 300 years.

There you have it. Fanatic religious insane people. From very respectable religions, on both sides if you ask me.

Now you need to look at the context. The world is a dark place. The church and the lords are lights in that darkness, and all you need to do is to follow to be promised a better life later on. Keep in mind that if you didn't have children by age 18, you'd be considered "old boy"/"old girl", and that the living expectancy was 35-40 years old for lords and knights, less for peasants.

So yeah, dark times==> religious fanatics.

Correlate to todays situation. Crumble of the world economy as our nations strive to survive under crushing economic debts, as terrorism blooms everywhere you look and still madmen rule their countries with a hand of steel.
Oh, and Iran is going to get the A Bomb. And N Korea probably has it and is "testing" its rockets.

Yeah, now guess why we get more and more "insane" people.

Thats my opinion, one of many, but I'd say there is much more to come.
On a paranoid note, its either going to become a megacorporation society or a fully ecclesiastic system. I'd say 40%-25%-(rest of possibbilities).

Ryanbeev2 is looking for attention, but there has always been crazy religious people who only surface if they are given reason.

That's why I don't judge them, and having an opinion about one religion after watching the media? Go to hell people.
