i know, its a contradiction.
It isn't really a contradiction (unless ghost = the holy ghost), but this is a good example of your own belief at work.

i want to believe in some sort of afterlife
That's belief, then. The end of this "is there something after?" trail of thought for me is that we won't know until we get there. But if you believe in ghosts and believe ghosts are past people, then that's a good indication that you don't just want to believe in an afterlife-- you do. It can be intimidating to voice belief in one thing while rejecting another, but your beliefs are yours and so long as you don't hurt anyone with them, you're accountable only to yourself.
You don't believe in god, but you do believe in ghosts. And if ghosts = afterlife, then there you go.
yea, your right its just.. rather unsettling to think about, ever sense i nearly died a few weeks ago its been on my mind alot.
That's not uncommon. Near death experiences often make you reevaluate what you believe.
Probably the best thing for you to do, is explore some of the beliefs around you and see if any of them feel right to you. Remember, your own belief is your own. You don't have to conform to anything someone says. But it can be helpful for reevaluating your own belief by studying what and why others believe a certain way.
It's a sort of refining process.
