If you don't think Sarkozy is right wing, or acknowledge the shift of local governments in that direction, there isn't much hope for you.
Compared to the U.S "Right-wing". Sarkozy is a Democrat. I.E a "liberal". Left & Right wings mean different things across the pond. Someone you'd consider a moderate is a left-winger in the U.S.
I am aware of this, but in the context of France, he is on the right wing, and the right wing holds inherent anti-immigration and anti-Muslim sentiments.
What does this prove, exactly? It's a poor neighbourhood with high unemployment and fairly low education. It also has a large proportion of immigrants who are not likely to be Muslim. You're putting two and two together to make five. The report doesn't even mention Muslims, and that's not something I'd expect a Swedish tabloid to shy away from.
It specifically states that the Islamic 'courts' (as well as Jewish ones) cover civil disputes, and national law has primacy. They don't do criminal cases. It also clearly states that "the UK's most prominent Muslim organisation, the Muslim Council of Britain, opposes the idea [of implementing Sharia law], saying it will not support a dual legal system". Whether people want it or not - and the survey is small and unconvincing - it cannot and will not happen.
How's that for "hyperbolic". The evidence is right in front of you.
No, it isn't.
Now, if you would be so kind, can you come up with evidence that the 751 Zones urbaines sensibles are not areas where the French Police have little authority but are instead something else?
They're basically ghettos; poor, run down areas. The fact that a lot of the people living in them are Muslims makes little difference. They're crime beds just like anywhere else, and the police naturally find it difficult/are scared to confront them. They're only controlled by Sharia law in the sense that most Muslims live their lives by its principles. Neya, who has been to school in one such zone, would attest to that.
I see no difference between this and the contempt shown towards police by other poor minorities in other countries.
