If you believe your problem is the place that you're working at lying about you, then don't use them as a reference. It'll reduce your chances of getting an interview, but it would increase your odds of landing a job if that really is the case. Using your current job as a reference isn't really too good an idea, anyway.
Especially if you're really valuable to them.
I don't actually have them listed as a reference per say, just as a previous/current employer. Though on applications or during interviews if they ask if they can contact my past and current employers I typically say yes, unless no one works there that can verify my employment there.

How long have you been working at the job you're at now?
Been there for over 3 years.

How long are you waiting before you call them back to check on the new job? if the interview is monday, i call on wednesday. after every interview, no matter what they say.
When I was first in the process of applying and going to interviews, I would call back about 2-3 days later, but I stopped entirely about 2 months ago after 3 straight call backs I was told the position was already filled, after being told I would be notified(call or email) whether I got the position or not. I felt so embarrassed and stupid. Guess I'll have to get back to doing that.

Anyway, If you're so "essential" and all-around awesome (at least 2-3 times more awesome than your coworkers), then ask for a huge pay raise and threaten to quit if you don't get it. You're worth at least double your current salary, right?
Well, right now its the holidays... I doubt asking for more money now would do anything, I'd probably be told nothing can be done till after the new year when reviews and pay raises are normally handed out. I can't threaten to quit, I just don't have the guts to, especially since the company has suddenly adopted a quantity over quality method to employment. We've hired a lot more people then we did last year, and cut hours everywhere to compensate for it.

What job are you applying for?

Which sector are you in now? With current unemployment rate at 7.9% and job prospects still looking bleak, the often-repeated "it's the economy, damn it!" argument may be true in this case...
I currently work in retail, logistics division, and even my previous job was the same field. I fell I am well suited for it. I kind of want to stick to it, since its what I know best, maybe try to get into some actual "Warehouse" jobs and work my way up to some supervisor position after some years.
Thanks for the advice, and pointers so far everyone. Keep them coming please.
