Killing Strangers to Save Your Family's Life

typically i would save myslef and my family beacuse that is just basic survival intsinct better my genes live on than someone elses's. howver like many have been saying there are many factors that go into this. one point i would like to make is because they are random people in a country you have no idea who will die. i.e russia is chosen at random and it just so happens that the heads of russia are taken out? what then perhapes revolution because now the government is weaker and more people die because of your choice perhaps now 20 million die. or maybe a place in south america or africa is chosen and a tribe leader dies in thier anger they dedide it was the other tribes fault and are now in either a genocide or all out war. for example hate to bring this up iraq when the leadership feel people just began to riot and more killing insude so sometimes the death of one can actually be the death of many. another point is that of course you can't really put a value on one persons life over another's however there are people that are a menace to society and the world and at least i know that the people i know and love are good people. however i also know that if any of then die there are likley to be no real repercussions in terms of lives over the alotted. it makes it easier when the question is 1 life for 1 life rather than my life over the lives of 50 people, it makes it hard to justify when you say you are more important than 50 others.

In the first case I would definitely choose the strangers.
In the second, I hate to say it, but I would like to know the statistics of these strangers. If they are poor then I say let'em die. Why should I save 100 people who are already starving to death? Otherwise, since I'm going to die anyways, I'd choose myself since there's no real pain for me.
In the third, I'd choose myself.
You may ask "what do I get out of it," but I just don't want to go on living knowing I killed all those people to save myself. It would be much easier just dying and taking any people who cared about one another with me.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this, it's more like you do it or you don't do it. You can over exaggerate this however you like, but it's human nature to save yourself before others. If you were given a situation where there wasn't enough time to think, you would protect yourself instead of the other person. There are so many things happening in this world that we don't know and we simply don't care. If the media picks it up, they hype it so much that you want to donate for the cause. You don't spend time searching for someone to save, you wait till it comes to you.

hmm...i don't think numbers play a big role in my consideration. (unless the number is a significant fraction of total human population, that is, which obviously is flat-out impossible.) but well, it's really easy...i choose my side. i'm aware as long as we're fellow humans, all our lives worth the same, but that's why i prioritize myself over strangers. the ol' same reason, survival instinct.
p/s: mind you, if i'm forced to pick between me and all my families, i'll still pick myself.

I'd honestly pick the random strangers to die, in hopes of somehow whacking off some religious extremists by luck. But then again, it' definitely be on my conscience cuz I usually chat with alot of random people typically during when i'm flying or at airports. They not so bad at all.

I don't know em doesn't effect my life entirely. Like someone said "A person dies nearly every 10 seconds or less yet the world keeps going." Most I've "regret" these days was not going to Qudoba and instead going to Taco Hell. I had a lot of experiences of meeting friends doing stupid shit and what not... but anyways no I wouldn't give a damn. If I could choose a country it would defiantly be China... hell even let me pick the Gender (male). It'll help them. I'd choose to live on all three counts simply because of the numbers given. How would you distinguish 5 or a 100 dead people on the other side of the world given the number of daily deaths by age/disease/accidents. At a 1000000, well, it's impersonal after a certain point. I mean, who anywhere knows a million people? It's gonna be considered a tragedy regardless of where, so someone's gonna grieve

Scenario 3: I'd have the million in a different country killed.
Basically made my decisions because if one or the other is going to die no matter what, I'd rather myself and my family live.

It would probably eat at me every day and I would wonder if there was something else I could of done, but when I think about it I'd realize I'd still make the same choices.
Much Easier
I'd still save my family and condem random people. Even if the result was having to kill the random people myself one by one, I would do it. My family is the most important to me. I'd prioritize my mom, dad, two dogs, and sister before anything else, even myself.

Scenario 3: I'd have the million in a different country killed.

I'm really liking the responses, but how about we add a little spice? For all the scenarios, what if you could live, but your family would die? Would you rather condemn the random people or your family, if your life was safe?

I'd always choose for other people to die because I was actually included in the people around me dying choices, otherwise I'd choose based on who the strangers were if I could get that information. It'd pretty much come down to killing off the people whose lives were worse.
Also I'd ask if I could join their mysterious organization because clearly if they're powerful and secretive enough to get away with stuff like that I'd be better off working with them.
