Law Enforcment using AK-47 vs. AR-15? (US residents)

So I've been watching alot of nutnfancy on youtube (guy who does alot of combat/survial gear/gun reviews, Lt. Col in Army) and something he said in his 'AK vs. AR' series (where he compares the semiauto AK-47 variants to the AR-15 platform) about cops sometimes outfitting themselves with tactical carbines and opting for a AK-47 over a AR-15 [in the case when the dept. tells them to buy thier own as opposed to supplying officers with AR-15s/M-16s]. Now, I can't help thinking that the public won't be too comfortable if there's a police officer using an AK-47. Personally I'd be more comfortable knowing the officer's firearm would fire under any circumstances and definitely have stopping power, as opposed to a gun that needs religious cleaning and uses a small-caliber bullet.

What about you? What would you be more comfortable with a cop having in the trunk of his cruiser? AR-15 or AK-47?

I dunno, I think AK-47s are less accurate due to more recoil. And it's not like they will be used in the desert or very humid rain forests too often. I don't know how well they can me modded, either.

Plus I think people are uneasy around them due to their reputation in wars... Heh, oddly enough because they are good guns they are feared guns.


I would say M16 or the like. Heavily modifiable, versatile, and a good range of uses. If your paying that much for a gun, your going to use it for pretty much everything.

Come'on people, it's mostly issue with Colt made M4A1s or A3 version with standard aimpoint or ACOG scope, front grip with flashlight etc. for police work or military but AKs are really too primal plus it makes too much a bang in urban settings [unless you want the whole neighbourhood to know you are making a force-arrest].

Even for some standard conceal carry are list to MP5s,MP5Ks or Colt 9mm version though as to protect and serve than to shoot them all. Respect is the key word !

But for me, i stick to M4A1 or REC7 with ACOG and M203 GL plus 16" heavy barrel as it's nice, versatile, easy modificable [thanks to rails] and also a customize trigger group.

How about neither? I can't vouch for big cities with gangs, but I don't think most cops need anything more than damn hand pistol, and I hesitate to give them that. I hate law enforcement. They are all a bunch of jumped up scuttlefuckers who are power hungry and are too quick to pull out the taser or worse their side arm.

I think the M4s are only given to SWAT, additionally the Police usually only shoot in semi-auto. And why would either police or SWAT need the M204 (grenade launcher). And I'd like to see you conceal-carry a MP5.



Ever since the North Hollywood Shootout, it's been pretty much standard to equip patrol cars with assault rifles. Apparently A select-fire M-16 comes with promotion to Sgt. in the LAPD.But I think that all state's police forces are to an extent equipped with assault rifles as backup.

Where i live al officers carry an assault rifle. M4s or AR-15 because its a standard assault weapon in the us. The ony reason people like the AK more its very reliable and damn near impossible to jam and it shoot ta 7.62x39mm round which is much larger then most assault weapons. m4s are limited to 5.62 rounds while the AR-15 would be my personal choice being able to shoot .223 3.08 5.62 9mm rounds its a smexy gun!

I agree with this one. Cops are power hungry bottom feeders that could not accomplish anything so they resort to law enforcement. I have only met one cop in my entire life that was actually a decent person, the rest I will see in hell. Bottom line, give these fuckers bigger guns and they will look for every excuse they can to use them so they have stories for all of their cop buddies.

Wow, you guys are pretty cynical towards law enforcement, but i agree that they are too trigger happy in the stun gun department. In Australia, our gun nuts are minimal, almost non existent, due to the Howard assault weapon law back in the late 90s.

But i prefer the AR 15 over the Kalashnikov as it suits the "special forces" look of the SWAT and the need for a accurate and ergonomic weapon for user comfort. on the other hand,your not in a combat zone and the chances of the opposition using body amour is slim (but not unlikely) so the military 5.56 or the .223 is a waste of power. That's why Subs are much better in terms of maneuverability in urban areas, low power and high rate of fire such as the venerable MP5.

To the original question, the AR 15 family would be good and also there is a number of AR15 variants which can accept pistol rounds such as the 9mm conversion kit and the AR57 PDW kit.

I noticed in my last post I never answered sv51macross's question. I guess I would have to go with the AR-15 simply because it is quieter. No reason to alert the entire populace that one criminal is getting gunned down with excessive force. Also I am interested to know what the Howard assault weapon law is.

meh i think all cops should carry slienced weapons to minimize panic and chaos.

MP5K PDW seems good enough for a regular cop to have.
Maybe a shotgun with rubber bullets also

I agree to disagree. Cops are kinda bent outta shape with power...but I think steppin up with power is a natural thing. If something refuses to move apply greater force then needed to over power it. where i live police are needed. If the police didnt come here when called or showed the aggression they do this area would plundge into social chaos. so ya i agree police are power abusers but they are still needed...

i think that AK-47's are a little over doing it.

But having a ak47 MIGHT just lower abit of firearm contact in combat cuz the bad guys might think twice opposing a ak47 rather den m16 cuz ak have good reputation to live up with.

AK's are better for killing groups because they don't jam and are geared for use as automatic. AR's are usually more accurate, i don't know this one in particular, but i assume it is.

Police are primarily there to secure specific suspects, thus, their weapons should be more accurate.

I say they should only be allowed to carry what I can purchase legally. The availability of automatic weapons to the police force creates a divide between average citizen and the government forces. This gap allows the police to push the average citizen around. The average person has absolutely no fighting chance against the government due to the restrictions placed on the second amendment. In the current state there is little to nothing a person can do against the police.

Well yeah, assuming semi-autos. IDK if the police are even allowed to shoot full-auto (see the gunfight from 'Heat' [pachino/deniro/kilmer], the cops never fire outside semi-auto mode and that gunfight has been praised for its realism) for concern of the citizens.

And as for accuracy concerns, horizontally you'll really only see [IIRC] a 5" grouping at the ranges the police will be engaging in (100yds or less) and the only major concern is accounting for that big, heavy bullet falling out of the air. (stock AK sights account for the drop).

I'll most likely pick a another weapon over the AR-15, but I would never give law enforcement in America an AK of any kind. I'll tell you why because it's the "bad guys gun", it's a symbol that is now associated with "bad guys". Police are supposed to be the "good guys" and giving them the "bad guys gun" isn't the right thing physiologically.



Obviously a criminal :lol: How exactly are cops supposed o handle fully automatic machine guns with only standard hand guns? I think the North Hollywood shootout proves that doesn't cut it. So were just supposed to let criminals run around killing whoever they want? Cop's aren't the bad guys (well most of the time) they are people trying to restore order and peace, are some bad yeah but I'd take my chances with a cop over a criminal.

Cops keep order and relative peace without them murders, rapist, and all sorts of criminals would be running around free and life would suck. I know a couple cops none bad people in fact I know one who took a bullet for a kid not a bad person in my book.

Sounds like you were lucky enough to meet the fairy tale cops. The cops where I come from are treated like kings and God help you if you so much as bump into one. There is this thing called a black list and if you are unfortunate enough to get on it you should move, immediately.

I however live in canada and just so you know its actually much harder to become a cop than it is to join the military as a gun toting idiot. ive known a number of cops and there awsome guys. ive never had a problem or even heard from anyone i know of having a problem with one.

I think the cops here actualy have a hard time at doing there jobs right. in a city not to far away they ended up killing 3 people TOTAL over about as many months. Each of them good by the book reasons and yet due to the number they launched a full scale internal investigation.

good cops arent a fairytale here, there the norm.

@Fiery_penguin_of_doom have you heard of the black market? just because its not legal doesnt mean you cant buy it. and last i checked one bullet from a hand gun kills just as easily as one bullet from a rifle, try it some time. unless its an airsoft or paintball gun a handgun is all a normal person could EVER need and that includes for a revolution. theres alot more people then there are cops, alot more criminals to. just some facts that might help clarify things.

edit: one last thing, your statement "The police should never have more power than the people they were created to protect." is false. law enforcement only deals with those there protecting. the very criminals they deal with are those very people there suposed to protect. there just people that see fit to break the rules of society and usually put others at risk if not outright harm them.
