here's another short story
The day was beautiful, the sun shining down as if it had just discovered it’s true reason for living. Its beams caused shadows to stretch languidly across the Earth. A small coffee shop was enjoying the boom it received from the beauty of the day. Two new customers had just entered. The first was tall and blonde, more beautiful than handsome, so much so that the waitresses working that shift couldn’t help but stare and even flush somewhat. He wore a smart business suit with a red shirt and black pants, all of which were custom made. He arrived and asked, in a voice that seemed designed for song in the same way a Stradivarius is designed for playing, for a table out in the sun and that his friend would be meeting shortly for a business meeting, so a table for two would be most appreciated. He was led to a table that was set for two, and he sat down with an almost catlike grace.
The second man arrived shortly afterwards. He was tall and had brown hair, which he wore somewhat long, as well as the beginnings of a beard. He wore Blue Jeans and a plain white T-Shirt, on his feet were a pair of well-worn sandals and hanging around his neck was a small golden cross. He approached the desk and told the woman standing behind it in a voice that could be described as soothing that he was meeting a friend, and gave her a description of the first man. She told him that he arrived shortly before he did, and that she would show him to his table.
The first man stood as the second arrived, they shook hands in the way that old friends do when seeing each other for the first time in a long while, then they both sat down together. They ordered coffee, the first man taking his black, the second with cream and sugar, the second man also asked for a side of fries for the two of them. Then when the waitress left, they began to talk. It started out as minor small talk, the weather was discussed, congratulations were exchanged, books, movies, and music were covered as well, their coffee arrived somewhere between congratulations and movies. Once the conversational formalities were done the well-dressed fellow leaned over and began to speak. “Listen”, and then he said a name that humans are not meant to hear, and as such is impossible to convert into text, however we will call it †˜Yahweh’, ”You know there’s a reason I called you down here, you can’t visit me, and I can’t visit you, so let’s get straight to it.” Throughout this introduction Yahweh listened pensively and the other man continued. “It’s quite simple, I can’t take it anymore, I want out, I’ve been doing this for far too long and I quit.” Yahweh looked at his opposite and said. “Lucifer, I know you’ve been doing this for a while, but it’s only for a little while longer, you should be able to hold out a bit longer.”
Lucifer looked a bit taken aback at this news, at the respite that he would not receive, then he began his argument again. “You don’t understand, you can’t understand, you sit upon a throne in the city of silver, and I sit on the burning seat. You hear singing while I hear screams, you see the rapture of the saved I witness only the suffering of the damned and the pleasure of their tormentors. Please, this is torment for me as well, give me respite, there must be others willing to serve as your opposite. What of the demons I command, Beelzebub, the lord of the flies, he would readily massacre for what I unwilling rule.” God looked at his other and said, “No he, nor any of his brethren would be wise, for that very reason.” Lucifer searched for another example desperation showing through his melodic voice, “what of the other fallen, surely one of them would be appropriate to rule, what of my former standard bearer, Azazel, surely he would be right.” “No”, god said, “you were my greatest creation, you, who was designed to serve as my opposite, the shadow to my light, the evil to my good, it must be you, and no other can fill the position.
At this Lucifer became angry, he rose immediately and with such force that the chair he was sitting on went skittering across the floor. He began to shout and curse his other. “Why do you force this upon me, I did not ask for this position, I did not ask for this task. I have rebelled against you once; tell me why I should not do so again.” God began to speak, but Lucifer screamed in rage, “No I will not speak with you anymore, I will defy you and your edict once more,” At this he stood tall and allowed his mighty wings to spread, they were black as the night, they pumped toward the ground, and he flew into the air, in moments he was gone from view, never, or as long as such things can last, to speak with his creator again.
God relaxed into his chair, he raised his hand, and asked for the check. He quietly sipped his coffee, and a knowing smile began to spread across his face.
