I willl always stand firm that what he said was a monstrous thing to say, but it's not without basis
My point is, even if there was a basis to what he said, even if it made some sort of twisted sense, that doesn't change a damn thing. It was completely unnecessary to say such a thing on the show.
Also, it's okay if you don't condemn him for what he said because it made sense to him, but if you're not going to condemn him, you should also not condemn anybody else who says crazy shit due to their beliefs. You said that you couldn't understand why Falwell said what he did about 9/11. Well, guess what - what he said made sense in his own mind, and Pat Robertson actually agreed with him.
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Falwell said on The 700 Club, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" Fellow evangelist Pat Robertson concurred with his sentiment. Falwell further stated that the attacks were "probably deserved," a statement which was described as "treason" by columnist Christopher Hitchens. After heavy criticism, Falwell apologized.

To them, homosexuals and pagans and feminists are bad and go against God. Because America has a ton of them, God decided to punish America with 9/11. That's Jerry Falwell's and Pat Robertson's logic. It all boils down to God, no matter the event.
